Seriously though, did you mean you had to turn the headlights on manually or just the instrument lights?
I don't know about BINIs, but most modern cars have a brightness control for the instrument lights. Is yours set too low or perhaps the brightness control has a bad spot where it has been sitting?

I just recently changed my settings to turn on the daytime driving lights.  My dash lights stay off, but headlights and running lights come on.  Not sure what to tell you.  It works the same on both my 2008 and 2009 R56's.

Electrical gremlins are one of the most difficult to track down.  You may need to have the headlights reprogrammed to stay on, even if it is just the dash that is not working correctly....  This may reset everything back to the way it was....

I have had my Mini Cooper for a little over a year.  I have my fob set for my headlights to be on all the time. Last year when I bought my mini I was driving to work in the dark. When I started my car the headlights would come on as I have them set but so would the instrument panel lights and the speedometer lights.
