On driving the vehicle home it had a total loss of power once the car got over around 2000rpm. The car would return to idle, and idles smoothly at around 800rpm. Each time I went to drive off the car would immediately lose power again  as soon as I hit around 2000rpm (and would sometimes stall). If I drove like in the Italian Job - revving the car to 4000 rpm and taking off from the lights the car was somewhat drivable.... but go up a gear, drop down below 4000rpm and the power loss would happen again - it is like the accelerator pedal isn't working. The engine light does not come on

I have had to my mechanic who is not a Mini expert, he has done a code check - nothing. Fuel pressure stays good when the power loss happens, and he has replaced the spark plugs. The engine is grotty - showing signs of running rich (and perhaps carbon build up). The previous owner around 10 months ago also had the thermostat replaced.

So..... has anyone got any ideas? It seems electrical, the fuel pressure is registering OK. Any help greatly appreciated.

regards

Richard
It almost sounds like a defective throttle body - but this is just a guess.  It could be a simple intermittent electrical connection somewhere....

Too difficult to make a diagnosis without seeing the car.....

Does this car have that DSC button? If so turn it off. The symptoms are not quite the same as on my sons 2004 but when Directional Stability Control is on you cannot drive with enthusiasm. It cuts in and robs 80% of power. Disengage it and all is well

US
check for a clogged cat, and also modern cars have a 'limp mode'.  Google search that for your car.

It would be interesting do some resistance sweeps of the gas pedal / ETB if electronic, or the TPS if mechanical, could be a dead spot in a rheostat. If your keeping the car get a service manual.
