I did not want to do that cause there is a pressed metal dome at the end of the shaft.

Remove the boot, remove the cv from its cage, hold the cv and shaft in your hand and give it a sharp whack with a hammer they usually drop off.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Doug, thanks for your reply.

I did what I know. I removed the whole hub assembly. Whacked the CV off the shaft with the assembly and did exactly what you written.

One day I'll investigate getting the inner pot joint off , But not now. Have to keep going and put it all back together.

Hate the mess with the grease.

Maybe someone will still chime in as to how the inner joint is held on and how to remove.

Jim

No one has replied? I have not worked on pot joint half shafts for a Mini but perhaps the following will apply anyway. If not... I'm sure this will prompt others to reply and correct.

Remove the half shaft from the car. The outer CV joint should be held on by a circlip on the shaft which is driven through the splines of the joint. Cut any bands holding the CV boot on the outer end of the shaft and pull the boot towards the pot joint. At your bench vise, adjust the jaws so they are open just a tiny bit more than the diameter of the half shaft. Pull the half shaft down quickly through the vise jaws so the inner part of the CV strikes the jaws hard. The CV should pop off.

With the CV removed you should be able to replace both the pot joint and CV joint boots by sliding them off/on the CV joint end of the half shaft. The pot joint is probably OK with any nylon cable ties supplied. For the CV space is limited. An easy old-school securing method is to use soft iron wire about 1/16" thick. Wrap the wire around the boot twice then twist the ends together. Trim the twisted ends to about 1/2" long. With the twisted section pointed "up" bend the twisted section towards the back of the car. Tap the twisted end so it is down as low as possible. This should clear the inside of the hub.

I've never had to replace the inner pot joint boot until now. I know there is a c clip that holds the CV joint to the drive shaft. How is the pot joint held in place?

Do I decouple the cv joint and slide the boot up to the pot joint or do I detach the pot joint bearings? And how is that done without ruining anything.

Thanks for your help in advance.
