True Al......

I just wanted to list the "hot rod" desireable ones.

Yes it is. The Cooper name was used again in 1990.

.Squires.

I would not bother with the "Clubman" bit for registration
Simply register it as a 1991 Rover MINI....     which it is. Done deal.

The Clubman name may just confuse things (again) years down the line. (Sort of like BMW did when they introduced their "Clubman").

Most classic MINI owners know the Clubman (picture) as the "ugly sister" to the round nose MINI...  Someone buying your car years later may think the reg is somehow wrong because of the "Clubman" name....which on that Japanese "model" is no more than a trim option.

Now, the 1275GT , Clubman GT , GTS, 1275LS, and SS "Clubmans" are another story

1991 Rover Mini Clubman not 1991 Rover Mini Cooper Checkmate, I  would assume.

Yeah, the japanese market was unique when it came to Mini models. Why they called it Clubman... I have no idea.

. Maybe that is why they used Clubman rear bumpers front and rear on some of the late 80's early 90's Jap spec Mini's.

got to the page in the link you sent me. Having a Japanese friend of mine translate it for me. it does have cloth black pattern seats and black vinyl door panels with red piping. so to register it properly , the registration should be
1991 Rover Mini Cooper Checkmate ?
you have been most helpful, I checked out your website as well, nice
tks

Well, they actually did make a 1991 Mini Clubman but is not what you think it is.

The 1991 Rover Mini Clubman was the japanese designation for the Racing Green, Flame Red and Check Mate from 1991.

Still not convinced?

Take a look at the 1991 japanese brochure in the link below.

it is interesting that you mentioned that because on the back of the Mini is a decal that says "checkmate"
what was special about the checkmate ?

Japan drives on the left. You should have a right hand drive mini. Do you have AC?

1991 Clubman is incorrect as they did not make a Clubman in 1991.
It should be a 1991 Rover Mini as that was the way they were marketed in Japan.
Have you tried decoding the vin on this site?

just bought a JDM mini 1000 and trying to decode the vin. it is registered as a 1991 clubman but I don't know if this is right. it has the 998 motor 4 speed trans and a center exhaust out the back. black with a white roof. It is left hand drive with the three cluster dash above the steering wheel. The dash is not filled in but is a shelf like my 1974 mini 1000 was. what do I register this as The mini decoder is unreliable as it comes up as a 2001 Sterling. Here is the partial vin  SAXXL2S30214XXXXX. I think this means it is a left hand drive,  saloon, 998 with a clubman front ? any help would be appreciated, built in the UK ? What does the 8th digit "3" mean.
thanks
