Sump plus filter = 8½ pints or 4.83 litres.
Or for the colonials 5.1 US qt.

Chucking 5 litres in is 'overfilling' by a whopping 170ml.
5 US quarts is underfilling by 94ml.

When you consider the inaccuracy of a dipstick, I'm sure both methods are within tolerance...

my workshop manuals are listed in quarts as far as I remember , and back in the 70s with the ADO 16's ,  I was advised to NOT overfill the crankcase due to clutch contamination.  I've carried that since.  Not sure if it's true, but better safe than sorry.

I'm with Alex. I've often had my classic mini crankcase more than a half quart --even probably up to a quart--over the recommended mark. Not a problem. Seriously. Don't sweat it. No Big Whoop.

You've got about 1/4 of a quart too much.  And overfilling can spill onto the clutch disc.  Not a cheap repair.
Say what Mike?  A Litre is measured as a Litre....lol
5 Litres is too much

Say what ??

You'd have to basically fill the entire crankcase before that happened...

If it that cold in your garage, when you drained it, all the old oil probably did not completely drain out. That is why you should only replace oil on a warm engine. Or let it sit a good long time. Remember the phrase "slower than cold molasses"?

4.2 Litres without a filter change
4.8 Litres with filter change

So you put ~4.75 in... roughly= considering spillage. and drained only the Sump.

The oil filter + hose holds oil + around a half a quart. (probably a little less)

So now your'e on the full side for sure = but sitting for 3 months will let alot of oil settle into the pan.

I would  go with it and not sweat it.
Get it warm go for a drive and re check... Wont do any harm.

your fresh oil looks gross= should have changed the filter.

Good luck

Ive got an a+ 1275 that low on oil. I drained the pan completely and changed the put new oil in. I poured a jug with a little less than 4 liters in it in and spilled probably a third of a quart because the oil was so thick that it completely filled the valve cover before draining into the pan. I then added a 1 liter jug and now the dip stick is reading a little bit overfull. I didn't change the filter and the oil capacity is supposedly 5 liters without a filter change. The car has sat for maybe 3 months. Is this normal? Is it overfull enough to need some drained? Its about 38°F/3°C in my garage right now which would explain the thickness of the 20w50.
