+1 for Willie's advice.
When slowing down for any reason, I down-select gears as appropriate for the speed the car is going, so that I have the correct gear already for re-acceleration (or trundling along in slow traffic).

Of course, if the light changes suddenly or traffic suddenly comes to a halt in front of you and you need to brake hard, don't worry about gears and concentrate on a safe stop or avoidance. Better to have both hands on the wheel.

If I think I will not have to completely stop for the light I will lightly downshift to be in the right gear to go when the light changes. Do not downshift to slow down the car, use the brakes for that. Brakes are a whole lot easier and cheaper to replace than a clutch. Do not hold in the clutch while waiting for the light to change. This causes more wear in the system also. Not much at any one time but it ALL ads up over time.

Yes, downshifting to slow the car sounds really cool sometimes and we all do it for fun and the smile of hearing it. Just don't make a habit of it. We drive for fun so do enjoy it.

So, like two months ago I got a manual 2007 Mini Cooper (this is my first car and I learned manual on it.) I would like to know how to stop correct at stop lights. I live in a rural area and there are stop lights on the highway. So when the light turns red I have to stop as I'm going 60mph (96.56kph). When I stop I'm in 6th then I hold the clutch down, shift down until I get to the light and leave it in neutral. What I'm asking is if this is the right way to stop or if there is a better way?
