Is there a 4" hole through one side of the bulkhead for the heater air pipe ?  That came in during 1960.

What width is the rear window ?  A mk1 has a 36" aperture in the metal, with 34 1/2" glass visible between the rubber sides.

The rear window was 2" wider for mk2 cars (1967-69) but still had external door hinges.

Some other markers that I'm identifying to think it's an MKI is the fact that it has small oval taillights, sliding windows and the subframe mount is a two bolt.

Again, I'll be looking forward to see what British Heritage comes back with.

Yeah the number stamped is in the low 200K. I haven't been able to see if there is a preceding identification number, which I'm not if there is.

I went ahead and submitted a heritage certificate, so I'll see what comes back. Thanks again for the insight for this as this will help out a lot for title and registration purposes without having to deal with CA DMV. I've been a member of AAA for 40 years and they treat me good when taking care of DMV stuff.

Looking at Dr Minis (upside-down) picture, I reckon its a six digit number 299xxx.  I would date that to mid 1962.

A Heritage Certficate will give you all the information you need on the Mini. You’ll provide them the numbers from the bulk head stiffner. The license plates probably fell out of the system by now.  I used it to verify my 1960 Morris mini mk1.

It's on the diagonal stiffener that runs from the inner wing to the bulkhead crossmember. Right next to where the voltage regulator is mounted.

Having trouble working out exactly which piece of metal the stamp is punched into???

AFAIK these extra stamps (they were in different locations over time) were usually just the number and did not include the model ID.

Cheers, Ian

The number/s in that picture is the end of the official VIN or chassis number.

This will be preceded by K A2S4 or C A2S7 etc if it really is a Cooper, otherwise M A2S4 or A A2S7 for ordinary saloons.

Thanks for posting the photo! Gotcha with the badging. Well, I hope I get this figured out and curious to know if anyone else has numbers stamped in this area.

When I say RH side, it's inside the car looking out. The badging that came on the car was "Austin Cooper" on the boot. I could see the lettering pressed down and faded to the bare metal. I could be totally wrong but it seems this isn't something after the fact. The guy I got it from was in his 70's and had the car since the 70's but lost all paperwork to it and cut the front off thus losing the vin. I looked to see if the badging was drilled after the fact but when examining it looks pretty stock from factory.

Regards to the blue plates, I have some brothers in law enforcement in the auto theft recovery who are helping me out looking everything up. I'm hoping I will have some good news come back and get this titled.

I'm trying to get pics inserted but having difficulty so hang tight.

*update 1 - Yeah, so I cannot figure out for the life of me how to add a photo to this forum. It won't let me just drag the image from my desktop to the editor so its gonna be a bit till I can figure this out.

**Update 2 - So I went ahead and emailed you a picture of what I'm talking about. Let me know your thoughts.

Can you take a photo of the number? When you say it's on the RH side, is that as you are looking at it, or if you were inside the car looking out? You say it's a real MK1 Cooper, but how do you know it's not just a standard Mini? Just curious. Would like to help, but need more information. BTW, I would like to know more about how you are tracing the blue California plate, as I have one on a Mini that also doesn't have a proper VIN on it.

Hey All,

I wanted to see if anyone here has experienced the same number location/identification as I have with a 6-digit stamp on the right hand side of the bulk head on the strip of sheetmetal edge bet over 90 degrees above the subframe mounting location? After scouring the information on here for identification of vin/chassis number, I cannot find any information for a location such as this having stamped numbers. I'm wondering if this is factory or after the fact by someone that wanted to note the vin just in case the original tag was gone.

Unfortunately, my '61 MKI came with bill of sale and no vin but did come with the blue and gold CA plates which I'm in the process of researching its history for title verification and vin. In the meantime, would it be fair to say this is the vin?

It's an official MKI Cooper LHD from what I can tell with external hinges and sliding windows. No modifications were made to the foot board switching it from RHD to LHD, so this tells me it had to of been a vin that started with C-A2S7-L-xxxxxx.

If anyone has experience with seeing this when they took their cooper to bare metal, I'd be curious to know.

Thanks,
T.
