New to the forum. Thanks for letting me play. We have 3 Minis in the family. My 05 Convertible S, My wife's 06 S, and our daughters 09 Sidewalk which is an S convertible.

The problem we are having is that the 06 is killing alternators. She had it in a shop while I was out of town for a leaking valve cover. When she drove it home the car went into limp mode. I had a friend look at the car and he said the alternator had taken a dump. I was not available so I had him install a new alternator. Three months ago that alternator went out on a cross country trip to Colorado from Ohio. The local mechanic found a seized alternator. He sent it back with the car after installing another new alternator. Last week I was driving her car. There were no symptoms until it started surging, the electrical system was not charging. I had to charge the battery off of my Landrover to get the car home.

Obviously, I am getting sick of replacing alternators. Any ideas on why this car is having problems would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan has a good point...

Are you using the MINI factory replacement alternators or something else?

Have you checked to see if there are any error codes stored in the computer when the car is running?  It seems something else 'may' be causing the failures.  Are any of the pulleys (supercharger or crankshaft) or tensioner non-stock?

CA
It could be whatever manages charging on your car is not functioning properly and shunting electricity from the alternator to ground (or somewhere) and overloading it.

.

"Hang on a minute lads....I've got a great idea."

Thinking your just unlucky, try a different source for the rebuilt alternators.
