Did you do proper end balancing on a rig or by just weighing the caps and rods and matching them ?

Would you mind if I ask how far off the rods were? I have balanced all engines I build since the 60s. While most new cranks are close out of the box, the flywheel, backing plate and balance is where most corrections are required. I'm sure you realize the pistons and half the rod are reciprocating parts and the big end is considered rotating.
The reason I started balancing was my first Cooper S engine. Built it, started it up pulled out of the garage and a certain rpm I could not see images in rear view. Pulled it back in the garage removed and stripped the engine and had it balanced. Yes, it cost me gaskets, rings and time. I never looked back. Steve (CTR)

Just balanced my conrods. Vizzard book suggests that these being light conrods in the first place not to take much off and shot peen them afterwards. Is shot peening really necessary for an untuned road car? Con rods balanced to 0.1 gm small end and 0.2gm big end. Rod weight now 658 gms. Pistons within 0.1gms. Had to change crankshaft due to bearing seizure but no plans to balance it. i realize that could now be worse than factory balance but since close to the centre of rotation should have less effect than piston and conrod imbalance that was 6gms.
