You have it correct. The dot-to-dot sprocket alignment is 180 degrees out from what common sense tells you it should be. When the dots are aligned your engine should be at #4 TDC on its firing stroke (both its valves closed).

I am just finishing up a rebuild and am wondering if I have gone wrong. With #1 at TDC, valves look good, distributor is pointing about 2 o'clock as it should but the dots on the crank and cam sprockets are 180 out. Should the dots align when #1 is firing or when #4 is firing? The crank timed out at 107 degrees so I suspect all is ok. Thanks in advance. Mike
