Hey guys. Just thought I’d update you. Got the new fuel pump in, put in about half a tank of fuel, adjusted the valves, and timed the engine. And what do you know the mini flew up my steep ass drive way haha! ???????????? Thanks for all the help as always.

Side note I’m moving to California next week so hope to meet any California minis soon.

Yes i would do it.
If you do not have a flaring tool just buy a piece of steel brake line with a flared end cut it to about 2 inches long drill a hole in the tank near where the fuel line comes through the boot floor and weld, solder or braze it in place. Check for leaks overnight and spray it with some black paint you are good to go.

Just install a flared nipple in the lower corner of the fuel tank it will be cheaper than locating and buying a used or new Carb tank.

Fuel pumps that are submerged in the gas inside the fuel tanks use the gasoline to cool the pump.  When one continually runs the tank low, the pumps have a tendency to overheat and that kills them.

Ya I have a t before the carb. I was just trying to figure out what fuel pump would work best. I found a lower pressure one. I think eventually when I get more funds I’ll seitch to an early gravity feed type tank

minimike.. I just picked up a 3 PSI fuel pump from Advance Auto parts.. and like 6464 said you have to use a t before the carb..  I have just done a SPI to carb swap  .  and it runs just fine..  later bc

The injected minis fuel pumps puts out too much pressure. You put a "T" before the carb. One line goes to the carb, one goes to the tank. The excess fuel is returned to the tank.

Just went ahead and ordered a universal in tank pump so I guess we shall see how it goes! Thanks guys for the help and hopefully this gets me up my drive way haha

Yes I already have a Holley FPR in line. I guess my concern is getting a in tank fuel pump that’s putting out to much PSI since the spi pump only put out 1 bar or 14psi. I’m getting confused with all the flow rating and pressure etc. if I just get a universal in tank pump most are 43.5 PSI is that ok to run?

Low pressure = 1-4 PSI

The SPI tank would be difficult to make work with an in line pump because techincally it would have to pull gas UP from the bottom of the tank = out of the top' and then to the pump  = then to the engine.. ALot of work for a normally ' gravity' fed setup.

Normal early tanks have the fuel outlet on the bottom and the fuel naturally gravity feeds the fuel line to the pump.

UNLESS you add an OUTLET to the tank = low in the tank = Like an early tank = or convert the tank to a Earlier Style.
 

I would have already thought  if you completed the SPI to Carb conversion a FP Regulator would already been in place with that conversion.

For simplicity = I would still do the walbro intank pump = and attached Holly FP Regulator.

Or better question is how would I “modify” my spi tank to use a low pressure fuel pump that’s outside the tank?? Is that possible?

Would my fuel pressure regulator have trouble regulating the fuel pump if I got a universal one? I’m having a hard time finding one that states what psi it puts out.

Just looking at the specs and an SPi pump should be putting out 14ish psi while the MM recommended replacement (intended for an MPi)  is something like 40+psi (and costs a bomb . I would expect you might have issues regulating this down to the required pressure.

With your carb you're wanting something like 2 to 3....

A more suitable alternative would seem to be a Facet or similar intended for a carb Mini. Carter make a rotary pump bout I found them somewhat unreliable.

It might be a bit more of a hassle to fit (the FI pump seems to have its outlet higher than you would want for an external pump) but may be worth the effort in the long run..

Yup have In tank and running fuel pressure regulator. I’ll give this a look! Thanks for the info. Yes already tested the fuel pump hooking it straight to power and nothing so pretty confident this might be the issue. Thanks guys

Spi to Carb Conversion.  SPI had In Tank Pump
 Is that what you're  needing to replace?

CHeck into Walbro 190 LPH in tank fuel pumps.


You can find replacement pumps with filter socks and plug terminals for a near bolt in solution to the SPI Fuel tank.

I have used and works great.  (with and SPI)    you probably still are running a Fuel pressure regulator so thats OK too.

Hard wire the pump wire first to be 100% certian thepump has gone out.   (battery power straight to Fuel pump input)

UPDATE: added more fuel today and brought the gauge from empty to half. Started up and was adjusting the carb a bit. Then the car died. I thought it was my adjustments but when I went to turn it on again I didn’t hear the fuel pump. It was getting power to it but not kicking on. Pulled the fuel pump and it’s dead ??????? must have been running it dry trying to get up the hill without enough fuel? Any ideas on what universal one I could pick up at a local parts store. Or should I order OEM?
