Was the HIF 44 rebuilt? Has the float level been set? Are you running a heat shield? Are the fuel lines away from the exhaust?
It sounds like fuel starvation and the above are all things to check.

My first suspicion would be the flow capacity (litres per min. or something) of your pump. You say the filter is "ahead" of the tank. If it is first in the fuel line after the tank in terms of flow direction, it would be ahead of the pump but after the tank. In that location, it could be causing difficulty for the pump to pull at a sufficient rate. Try relocating the filter to after the pump.

I don't race my Mini (except in my imagination!), which has a 1275 high compression with a HIF 44. My clear plastic inline filter is just before the carb in the engine bay where I can I can easily see it and replace it. My pump is a regular electric SU type down in the rear subframe where gravity keeps it fully fed. I work on the assumption the pump can pass fine debris without issue that the carb might gag on, so it is the carb that needs protection. The filter also indicates presence of fuel and would probably catch any water if I had that problem. Since my tank has been treated with POR15, I have no worries about rust and I get gas only from a reliable big chain station. I have not had to change the filter in several years and it still looks clean.

My car originally came with a mechanical pump plumbed directly from the tank with no filter - probably the way it was built, except for the 1275 transplant.

Hello all

I have an autocross prepared 71 Mini running a stock 1981 A+ 1275 with an HF44 SU carb. I have an Edelbrock 2-3.5 psi electric fuel pump with an inline filter mounted low and ahead of the tank. When I go through the finish line under max acceleration and the come to an immediate stop, the car stalls and it takes a couple of attempts at starting the car to get enough fuel into the carb to get it running again. It seems like I used all of the fuel in the internal storage fuel bowl of the carb and need to refill before I can get it started.

I didn't have the same issue with the HF38 that I just replaced.

What do you think? Carb issue, fuel supply issue, dirty fuel filter, carb adjustment....
