Depends on the clutch you're running.

I've left it out on the majority of cars I work on for the last 15 years, but with a race clutch and flywheel on Betty I did a "scientific test" with feeler gauges between the end cover and transfer housing.  Maybe this one was particularly flopsy, but I put the bolt in and it stopped moving outwards.

Slather the bolt in anti-seize as well, and only nip it up instead of torquing it.

Cover is off without resorting to cutting the rear bolt. Had room after lifting engine enough to slide it out. There will be a slightly shorter bolt going back in rather than leaving it out.

You should be able to remove the 8 o clock bolt easier with a flex head ratchet wrench.
I guess you could slot the cover to ease the bolt fitment or some owners leave it out.
No need to remove the starter motor.

If you remove the stabilizer bar and lower engine mount you can move the engine about to help better get at the cover bolts. Just watch fan and radiator for interference

I need to replace the clutch lever arm and shaft so the cover needs to come off. I know the obvious stuff but any tricks that would make it a bit easier? The back bolt is a long one so going to need to cut it half way out. This is a verto setup. Do I need to remove the starter?

At least the weather looks to cool off a lot so the garage won't be near as hot.
