So i guess you then learned about the two spring loaded detent pins that hold the splined lock ring..

Press in the sprung detents  -   twist the lock ring.  whole slides off.

I'm putting in a new 2nd gear, but it's because I tried "coaxing" the original off the shaft, and broke it in the process.

Steve, any idea how they fixture the rings to face them off... or do you think they remove the 0.020" with a surface grinder?

I think the MS rings that are getting good press are the "EVO" rings.

Right on time .. I lost 2nd gear downshifts too!

Stripped down the transmission and 2nd gear lost the 'friction' material.
That Baulk Ring is  also a bit more worn than others now.

Ill be comparing the heights of all 4 = before going back in .  #2 will be selected with either new or used ( having th ebest gap for it to do its job,.

Mind you, I haven't bought any baulk rings for about 4 years, but what I'd found is that often times good used ones are better than cheap new ones.  And cheap new ones are no worse that expensive Genuine Rover ones.

I can't speak to CTR's theory/rationale, but I will often mix them around on a gearbox and put the best / most proud one on 2nd gear, the next best one on 3rd gear, and the worst one on 4th gear.

Of course, these are my personal gearboxes. I don't do "customer" boxes.

I have a rule about the rings. When striping I keep the rings with the ramp. If the one coming out has a larger gap than a new one it should go back. Mostly fourth gear sometimes third on a properly driven car almost never second and first. They are starting to say old ones can be machined .020 and reused better than new. Who knew? Steve (CTR)

Stupid question:  Do I care what shape these are in, or do I just chuck and replace them automatically?  Obviously I would like not to take this stupid thing apart again..
