Did someone remove the cat and that is why the exhaust was not connected?

Does this small pipe come up from the ex manifold to the R front of the engine and have a slotted screw-in plug on the end?

If so, it sounds like a exhaust gas sampling pipe/port- used to monitor (a) A/F ratio, (b) emissions testing .
It is nice to still have it for (a) especially if engine is carbureted.
Are you going to require it for (b) either your tuning or govt testing?

Outside of this, I think you can cut it and cap off or crimp the pipe shut if it is the sampling pipe.
I don't know if you could cut it and then later braze it back together later on re-installation if you wanted the feature

#2  -    is it  behind the Cat  converter?


Before the cat would be the O2 sensor = which makes the car run with the ECU  Unplug from engine bay harness and drop exhaust out.

BUT i believe you're dealing with Cat temp sensor.

  Later injection cars.  from Japan also had a rear sensor = for Catalitic temperature =    Few threads out there on 'just removing it.
  there may be a warning light on your dash for the cat temp too if things ever went that direction.

1 - sounds like an evap system, part of emissions control. There should be another pipe returning from the can to your air intake. 
2 - sounds like an O2 sensor which I’ve heard can seize in pretty well. Not sure what the best options are for removing. is this an injection engine?

Background - I have more than the average persons knowledge on working on vehicles and how engines work, however, I don't know everything and need some help learning more. I have rebuilt engines when I was young with my dad (held the flashlight), fast forward 20 years, I now have a 92 1275 Mini that I am restoring and learning about. Its currently striped all but engine and front suspension and I'm working on replacing panels and rust. I know how to weld and have all the tools I need, but lack the experience and know how on certain things, so I am reaching out to the forums. I have read countless forums and watch countless youtube videos, but they cant explain everything.

I couple of the things I am trying to figure out is.

1. Above the fuel tank (removed now) is a pipe, from looking at parts catalogs I believe its the shut off valve. It runs under the car along side the fuel line and into the engine bay, from there it goes into the left fender and attaches to a cylindrical thing which then vents out the bottom. What is this and what does it do. I believe the entire thing is just a vent for the fuel fumes, but im not sure.

2. I was removing the exhaust and found out it was not connect to the manifold. Also attempted to removed what looks like a O2 system connect to a small hard pipe connect to the exhaust in front of the firewall just below where the exhaust connects to the headers. This thing is impossible to remove and I have no idea what it is. Any advice on removing it and what it is would be appreciated. I cant get the exhaust pipe out without removing it.
