Chas look at the gearlever seat -22G389 and other pieces in the gearlever end of the shifter for wear and replace the worn parts if you can - I see a lot of NLA ( no longer available ) parts on the illustrated parts brake down of the remote shifter. Don't know about the spring and ball bearing in the first bushing - I have seen a hole being drilled and a zerk fitting being installed so the first bushing can be greased as well as spring retaining cap being drilled and a zerk fitting being installed there as well ( with a hole drilled thru the anti rattle plunger ) to grease the bushing area at the other end of the shifter.

Wrap a layer of aluminium from a soda or beer can around the bullet shaped lug at the bottom end of the shifter.

Has any one come up with a cure to the rattle in the early remote shifter? Thought of drilling hole in Al case where rod goes through the first bushing ( trans end) and putting in a ball bearing and spring to dampen? Any one tried this?
