so sorry, its a 2007 cooper s, the key was on the washing machine, quite a ways away from the car, seems like just the circuit that runs the radio and gear shift is the only one on , otherwise I would think the battery would have ran down by now

You don't say what car you are talking about, or its particular model etc.
I'm guessing your car might have one of those proximity features where you just need the key near the car to unlock/start etc. If so, and the key was in our pocket, it could have enabled the operation of accessories such as the radio.

The radio typically uses low level power to retain station presets.

So the light on the shifter is on all the time and today when I was removing the speedometer to replace the digital screen I bumped the button for the radio and it came on along with the cd it spit out, why is there power to the radio when I didnt even put the key in the car?
