Engine was a total rebuilt, rings , bearings, head, valves, mileage is 110k, no knocking I use 91 octang, engine is stock, I live in so.california with strict emission tests and it just passed smog no problems, so I would rule out a bad cat, my guess is the turbo not fuctioning right, turbo checked out ok when I reassembled the motor, but Im not sure the waste gate or blow off valve is working properly, not sure how to check if they are.

Could be a few things.

How much of the engine was rebuilt?

What's the mileage?

Are you hearing knocking or pinging sounds from the engine?

Do you have any perf mods on the car?

Some causes:

Engine most likely is running too rich. Could put it on a diagnostic to check. Black smoke = running rich. White smoke = blown head gasket/head. Blue smoke = burning oil.

May be clogged sensors? MAF, O2, etc. If there's a sensor that's not working right or at all, it won't give the correct fuel to air mixture.

When is the last time when cleaned the injectors, and/or replaced or checked them? Again, if it's high mileage, and you've never done anything with them, may be worth a look.

High milage engines could have a clogged cat converter, exhaust, mufflers.

Do you have an open air intake filter, or stock air box? Are either clean? If you have an open air filter, how long ago did you install it? With the open air versions, do you have one that requires oiling, or is it a dry one. Oiled ones can suck the oil off of the filter into the intake and clog the sensors along the way, if it's oiled too much.

How about fuel? Do you use good fuel? Also, if you have the 'S', you need higher octane. Have you swapped out your fuel filter?

Black exhaust from a gas-powered engine means the fuel isn't burning completely. You get the same, when smelling sulphur, when mashing the throttle at WOT.

There's some engine cleaning and fuel system cleaner products out there that clean as they pass through.

It could also be some internal and mechanical issue(s). If you haven't looked at the above mentioned areas, then I'd try that first.

.
Simple recipe for Excitement:  Take 1 Classic Mini. Throw in 1590cc's of engine. Add 5 gears. A dash of 94 octane. A sprinkle of style inside and out. Toss in 1 MadMan and finally heat tires and pavement to taste. Recipe produces 1 Mini VTEC conversion and full satisfaction. Motor on!
