OK, I have had a lot of time and several R56's to see this issue.
The N12B16 is super dependent on vacuum. The PVC valve and hose are critical. Do not overlook the oil filler cap. Is the seal still on the cap (sometimes it sticks to the valve cover, dislodges and falls on the ground when the cap is removed)? If you remove the oil filler cap on a good running car, while idling, it will die within 30 seconds. That is how important vacuum is to this engine.
If you have the basics: Fuel pressure and ignition, then this is where I would put your focus. It's overlooked so often and mis-diagnosed as something more severe when it's just as simple as replacing the PCV hose from the bottom of the intake manifold to the valve cover, the seal on the oil filler cap or a new PCV diaphragm in the top of the valve cover. FYI- if you are using a lot of oil and the car is not an abused vehicle, REPLACE the PCV valve first. It's a $25 kit and you will be shocked with the results.

Vacuum leak?
PCV system defect?
Vanos solenoid?
Thermostat / temp sensor?
Did the code go away after you replace the MAF sensor? Any new codes?

So I bought this car from a guy near LA, told me he rebuilt the engine but couldnt get it to run, I decided to go through the engine and do a basic rebuild myself, got it all together yesterday, and started it up, ran for about 20 seconds and died, checked the codes and got a MAF sensor, I changed it out with a known good one off my daily driver, car will run, but only if I have my foot on the pedal, as soon as I lift it dies, since a basically changed everything on this engine, I dont know what else it could be. some advice would be helpful
