To answer your question, Yes, you can drill the holes in the head. The reason for the 2 extra studs is because the 60's Cooper S engines had 200 psi per cylinder. When the Cooper S models were dropped from the line up, there was no need to beef up the 998cc engine.

The rockers are adjusted.

Two extra head studs is not going tp make any difference in the noise department. When was the last time the rocker arms were adjusted?

My head makes quite a bit of rattle at idle (11 stud). I have and extra head I'm thinking about having rebuilt (9 stud). Can i just drill the two extra holes in my 9 stud head? I have set the valves and changed rockers. Still bit noisier than I think it should be.
