It's happening with my 2014 Clubman, too.

Thank you for your reply. I'll let you know what my mechanic finds out.

I am having the exact problem with my 2013 MINI. It started when there was a passenger. Now it is all the time.

With or without a passenger in the passenger seat, my airbag system failure warning light stays on and it says to check the system. Before I take it in to a Mini mechanic, is there anything I should specifically check? I already looked under the passenger and driver seats for any loose wire connections and everything is connected.
It is a 2013 Mini 2-door hardtop with 46,000 miles on it.
Thank you in advance.
