Thank you Ken. Much appreciated. I'll keep driving around the block until the lamp goes out. I dont want to clear them manually as the smog test will detect and fail me.

Yes, if you make correct repairs to address the fault code, the check engine light should clear itself after multiple cycles or miles. There are exceptions (like SRS airbag fault codes) but most will clear itself after repairs.

CA

I'm not sure about your car, but most systems report active codes and pending codes, and keep a history of resolved codes. Your codes "may" go away, assuming you've replaced the faulty part(s) and done the installation procedure correctly. (Real, classic Minis don't have this problem!)

For an example of how modern diagnostics are done, have a look at this video:

South Main Auto

Eric O. runs a small town independent garage and is an expert at diagnosing weird problems. He uses an assortment of diagnostic tools, including the one shown. Note this tool is connected to the OBD port via bluetooth and is connected to a diagnostic subscription site via the internet. It is interesting he can turn on/off certain components using the tool. Enjoy!

Do I need to clear the Diagnostic Codes and engine light, or will they turn off automatically once the new part is in? I was told also that I need to drive 50-100 miles to reset ECU after clearing codes. Can anyone verify this?
