The FE number is a factory identifier of the front end sub assembly. Apparently factory records were not kept. Minis are notorious for being modified to look newer or older
You could start by posting photos of your Mini to help folks here narrow down whether it is a Mk I, Mk II or a later car. There are small differences that can pin it down some. If it turns out to be a later MK, it may have the original VIN number stamped in the bonnet gutter on the right side above the bonnet hinge.
Overall photos, then, etc. details like the tail lights, front panel below the bumper, dash, seats and seat belts, engine bay, bonnet hinges, radiator surround, engine etc.
.

Hello everyone,
My name is Yash Majithia, and I am a 27-year-old Mechanical Engineer with a Master's in Renewable Energy Engineering. Currently, I work as an Energy Consultant at a prominent global consulting firm. I was born and raised in Bombay, India, and I am fortunate to still call this vibrant city my home.
I recently fulfilled a long-time dream of mine by acquiring a classic Mini. However, I am currently facing a challenge in categorizing it correctly as either a MK1 or a MK2. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate the VIN plate and the chassis number on the car, which are essential for registering it at the Bombay Regional Transport Office (RTO). Without valid papers, my Mini, despite being a running car, sits idly in my garage.
The car has an FE number on the right side of the radiator, and the wiper motor bears a year stamp indicating '64. However, these details alone are insufficient for the registration process. Minis are quite rare in India, and historically, there was little concern for originality, leading to parts being used across different generations. This means that even if my car is a MK2, it might have a wiper motor from a MK1.
I have always admired the classic Mini, inspired by watching Rowan Atkinson driving the iconic bright green Mini in "Mr. Bean" and seeing Minis race at Goodwood. Owning a Mini has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. Fun fact: Rowan Atkinson and I share the same birthday!
I am reaching out to this community for guidance on locating the chassis number, VIN, or BMK number. Your assistance will be invaluable in helping me navigate this process and finally get my Mini on the streets of Bombay.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Warm regards,
Yash Majithia
