It may also be the knuckle joint below the Adjust-a-Ride trumpet. It is basically a stell ball sitting in a plastic cup. The plastic does wear out. When I put my A-Rides in many years ago, I noticed that the stem of the knuckle that fits into the adjustable trumpet was a larger diameter than stock.

You can get just the plastic cups and replace them. Usually, when they wear out the ride height ends up being lower... tires start to rub on wheel arches, even with stock trumpets. Yo put the new cups in, you cut the old ones out, clean the pockets, including the vent hole in the bottom. It lets the air out as you press the new cup in.  A thin wipe of light grease in the pocket can help the cup go in.

When I had a clunking sound like that it was the end of the steering rack bushing gone bad. It would be the end opposite the driver. You can try grabbing the rod a few inches from where it exits the rack and see if you can move it up and down a lot. There should be very little movement if it is good.

I have a suspension issue with my 1989 Mini. A few weeks ago after driving down a bumpy road, a banging noise starting coming from the front end of the vehicle. The best description of the noise would be a sound like something banging against the firewall over bumps. I've troubleshot everything suggested online including the motor mounts, subframe mounts, all the normal front end parts, etc. I replaced the shocks; one was totally worthless. I discovered this morning when I jacked the front end up and listened to the Adjust A Ride with a stethoscope, the Adjust A Ride part makes a lot of cracking noises and banging noises while I'm jacking the vehicle up; it's certainly not quiet. Is that banging noise a typical symptom of an Adjust A Ride failure? If that indicates a failure, do I just change the front pair and do I replace it with an Adjust A Ride or something else? Thanks, Steve
