Cats are hot furnaces that burn up any remaining hydrocarbons. The O2 sensor feeds back to the ECU.

Does the catalytic converter have any bearing on the ECU?

It looks like a catalyst overheat sensor warning buzzer. This were installed on Japanese market Minis (with catalysts, of course.)

JDM minis never got the MPIs. That part is not factory. JDM minis were the only minis to get factory AC units because the Japanese paid to develop it. JDM minis were built in England because it was cheaper to build it in England.

I have a JDM 1996 Mini that was built in August of 96,  It had the wood dash that needed refinishing, so I have now removed it.  Looking in the instrument area attached to the firewall I found what appears to be factory-installed I found what is indicated in the pictures to the left.  The  white connector wasn't connected and I can't find any possible place for it to be connected. The only thing I can think of is because it is so close to the end of the SPI model year and close to the MPI that maybe it was going to be a MPI and it has something to do with the immobilizer, airbag or anything else different between the two models.

i would appreciate any thoughts.
