ELGIN CAM DESIGN PHILOSOPHY You probably have figured out by now that I am not an advocate of extra high lift, unnecessarily long duration, or very high compression for any street driven car. I prefer instead to use maximum velocity in the camshaft design which allows my cams to have more duration at 0.050", 0.100", and 0.200" lift compared to the "Brand X" cams you might get from other sources. A side benefit of this design choice, it turns out, when you have more duration at 0.200" - 0.300" lift and not as high a cam lift, you end up with a cam lobe with a rounder nose radius which will support higher valve spring loads and therefore will last longer than a "pointed" high lift cam. I learned a long time ago that dwell on the nose, or top, portion of the cam lobe is equivalent to lift provided that you have the valve open far enough when the piston reaches its maximum velocity. On a normally aspirated engine, I have never seen power increased by adding valve lift above and beyond the flow capacity of the head.

Elgin hot street cam, header recommended. 9.5:1 compression. Intake duration is 268 while the exhaust is 278 degrees. Valve lift with stock ratio rockers is .397" on the intake and .401" on the exhaust. Uprated valve springs also recommended! At  TDC intake opens at 27 Deg , and the exhaust closes at 32 Deg . At BDC intake closes at 61 Deg , and the exhaust opens at 66 Deg.  Valve clearance intake is .014 " , and the exhaust is .014 ".
Star drive Elgin cam for mild road, smooth idle. This reground camshaft has an intake duration of 244 degrees and an exhaust duration of 264. The valve lift is .327". At TDC intake opens at 9 Deg , Exhaust closes at 29 Deg. . At BDC intake closes at 55 Deg , and exhaust opens at 55 Deg. Valve clearance intake is .012" , and exhaust is .014".
The "CAM003" cam has been produced by Mini Mania for well over 20 years and has been used extensively in our 1380cc engines becoming legendary in its own right. It is the ideal road cam for 1275cc or 1380cc, below 5500 rpm the CAM003 produces more power than the 286 profile. The average driver spends 90% of his use of the car below 5,500rpm. Our 'Second Generation' '003' grind is now called "CAM103". Not only does this produce over 115HP in our 1380cc motor but it is even more streetable, pulling strong from as low as 2,000 RPM up to 6,500 RPM with ease. All of this with stock ratio rockers and single 1 3/4" carb. One of the added features of the "CAM103" grind is the great performance in small bore applications such as 998 and 1098cc engines. Though not know for their high rev potential, 998's and 1098's with this second generation cam will have all the bottom end you will ever need transforming the engine into a hot street version.

Question:
I have an early Mk1 Sprite. The cam is the type that two of the bearings run direct in the cylinder block and only the third has a white metal liner. Is there any mildy uprated cam that could replace the standard one in this fitting? Chris
Answer:
Our CAM103 grind is a nice upgrade and vert street car friendly. We can do a regrind of one in a pin drive format (I'm assuming yours is pin drive?). It provides more low end torque for more power at lower RPM's.
