Mini pickups are quite rare – and seldom come up for sale. This is an exceptionally nice one, with all the good stuff!

The factory never offered a “Sport Pack” version of the classic Mini pickup, so this 1972 model has been updated to mimic the late-‘90’s Sport Pack Mini’s look and performance.
Distinctive Sport Pack exterior upgrades include genuine Sport Pack wheel arches (flares), 13” Minilight-style (8-spoke alloys), and quad driving lights in front. A chrome grille replaces the stock, body color grille; (Sport Pack and Mk2+ Minis were fitted with chrome).

Later-model mechanical and performance upgrades include a motor swap to 1275cc (the largest factory-fitted size available), versus the truck’s original – and anemic – 850cc engine. The transmission is the four-speed, four-synchro “rod shift” (stronger, smoother-shifting) model that replaces the truck’s original “waggly” (aka: “pudding-stirrer”) gearshift-equipped model.

Braking performance is also enhanced by upgrading its original drum brakes to front discs – which dramatically increase stopping power.

Exterior upgrades include a roll bar in the bed, a vinyl bed cover and a rubber bed liner. Twin chrome side-view mirrors are also fitted. British number plates (ie: license plates) are on the front and rear. The 13” JBW/Superlight wheels are wrapped with Continental 195/43-13 tires that are in very good condition.

The 1275cc engine’s intake and exhaust systems are also upgraded, including a single HIF38 SU carburetor on an alloy intake manifold, an aftermarket header and a performance exhaust system with a dual chrome tip. The engine bay also features an alloy rocker cover. A noteworthy feature is that the grille is upgraded to Mk2+ type, which is removable; pickups (and panel vans) were fitted with fixed, pressed-steel grilles that made under-bonnet access very difficult. With the updated grille, the engine compartment is easily accessed for routine maintenance to the distributor, alternator and starting systems.

Interior upgrades include later-model beige vinyl seats with cloth inserts that are more supportive and have headrests. The carpets are red and are in good condition. The steering is right-hand-drive (RHD), as originally built, with a leather-wrapped, stock steering wheel. A wood dash is also fitted.

Minis – particularly pickups with their open beds – are prone to rust, but this truck’s body is said to be solid, including the floors, sills and load bed. One door has minor rust blisters in its lower section (photos available).

Recent professionally done work includes a rebuilt transmission and rebuilt front and rear suspension. (The invoice for $6,400 is provided). All maintenance was regularly performed by a well-known Mini specialist shop in Costa Mesa.

This pickup has won many show awards on this side of the pond, including “First Place – Best in Class,” among others.
