IF you are "doing up" a MKI and want it to look semi OEM AND you can't get the seal from the photos above (We can't seem to and "sending back" is difficult when the local supplier has the hard-as-rock ones and you order yet another that looks just like it from UK) - this method looks good if you don't look for the clips:

We *just* did our seal and this is THE ONLY WAY to get the "OEM REPLACEMENT" S***e ones to fit. Yep, this when the hole in the middle is too small and the bubble-count too low making for a seal that does not squish AT ALL.

*NOTE* You MUST clean the seal where-you-are-gluing with and agressive mould-release-remover in order to get the 3M adhesive to, well Adhere... Use some sort of laquer thinner or benzine-based solvent is a must for this, followed by steel-wool or fine sand-paper - Otherwise it's like gluing to WD-40. Glue the edge that touches the skin, leave the edge on the inner shell free to "float"

If anyone sells one that works like oem they'll really make my g/f's day. WTF.

Just got my boot seal on. Worked like a champ. A lot more spungy than the others I bought.

Nice and soft so compresses right up as it should.

Here is the Minispares rubber. Tried and tested in our own workshop. I sell dozens off them a year so there would be no point is stocking a part that doesn't work. We fell foul of the rubbers that don't compress a few years back. Stopped selling then until the problem was resolved.

I just put a newer seal in a MK2 and it worked fine.... Much easier than messing with clips and glue.

No I don't know if it's the same, Minisport in Australia is not the same company as Minisport UK. Their seals do come from someone in the UK, I asked the question.
However, I'm sure you can buy this seal from them here in Oz, as they do ship overseas.

Kevin:

Do you know if your seal is the same one sold from MiniSport UK?

One of my customer just brought in a D shaped sponge seal that looks factory other than it stick on. I will try and find out were it came from.

I just called MiniSpares this week. They said they sell the same seal as MiniMania.  MiniMania's was too thick and did not work.

The current seals sold by Minispares Centre UK work perfectly. They were also selling the thicker seals a few years back but seem to have got their act together at present.

Don,

Any comments or suggestions for those of us who buy the bits from minimania?  Is there a modification you can suggest that would allow us to use the seals from minimania and at the same time, get our boot lids closed?

Thanks!

A lot of rubber goods are now coming into Australia (and UK) from China. Those folks don't know much about quality and don't seem to care, either.
Same problem it seems as with other aftermarket parts that don't fit like they used to. We buy from UK, but where they are made- nobody is saying.

I bought a MK3 boot lid seal and the clips, put a new paint job on the boot lid;I installed everything. It looked beautiful. No way ,the boot lid would close. I have ripped out all of the clips, some paint was hurt. So I am looking for a manufacturer of rubber seals. I will also have a look at reducing the size of the seal that i have. If all else fails I will get the newer body style seal, and the holes will be delt with when I paint the whole car. Pity the guy I bought the seals from didnt know that they wouldnt work. Its a lot of money for nothing!!!!!!!
