Hey Manny,

I was looking at getting a challenger as I understood they were made in he USA, but found out that they "are made overseas, with final assembly in Louisville KY"

I'm just interested in how the lift in the link below compares (visually) with the HF lift... Does it look suspicioulsy similar?

//www.challengerlifts.com/pdf/MR6.pdf

It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Hey all,

Just thought i would give a quick update about the HF scissor lift.  I have had it a little over a year and had the first problem with it last week.  A O-ring went bad and it started leaking fluid, anyhow i replaced all of the O-rings and it's up and working again.

After a year of constant use, i really dont know how i ever worked on lower cars with out it!

And I thought I was fortunate to have space in the garage to park the mini. I am totally green with envy.

Here's minie, #7K lb, 110/220V DirectLift... Actually I think most of the 4-post lifts in the US are made by the same company and just re-branded....

When I did the remodel, I was designing the extra garage, I made sure they went with a high ceiling so i could add a 4post lift.  I wanted to place two mini's on top and two below.  It worked out great, i have the parking and i can do my oil changes and other work in stead of being on my back.  It's a bend pack, cost 3,000 that includes the lift, shipping, installation and taxes.

These are the lifts that Penske uses at his MINI Dealerships.  They are nice and don't use that much room.

Great Idea. I'm in Harbor Freight every week or so. (I hate flaunt it, but I *am* a member of the exclusive 'Inside Track' fraternity

Regarding floor pits. A wonderful vertical-space saver, BUT, please, if possible, leave yourselves an escape path, should anything 'untoward' occur.

I'm not only thinking about the danger from fire, but exhaust gases as well, since they are heavier than air and will fill the pit first.

I think a pit for the Scissor lift would be the way to go. When i was doing some research before i bought my lift i read somewhere that Having a pit in the garage is not Legal Code in Ohio, due to the fact that vapors can gather there and ignite. I had also seen somewhere that old gas station lifts are no longer legal at residential properties due to worn lifts leaking oil under ground. This information was mostly read online and may be totally false, but you never know.

Great ideas though, keep them coming...

Think about a mini-pit where the floor drain is - if you're talking only 7" or so, you could just reinstall the drain itself lower - the buried pipe should have a vertical section with a P-trap below it.

We have two full pits in our garage which was an old tractor shop back in the day. They are great for working under the car during the dry seasons. We live in the valley and are basically at sea level. During the rainy seasons the pits become grease pools and need to be pumped out. They are also fabulous for spider homes. I personally would rather have a lift but am grateful that we do have pits. Changing the fuel pump last year was a lot easier with the pit. I did however take a nice gas shower while doing it.

Dan....  I really think the shallow pit for the lift is a good idea.  I still need to use a short 2 x 10 board as a ramp on my BendPak lift because the Mini ground clearance is so low.  Unfortunately, I have a floor drain in the middle of my garage floor.  That kind of put a hold on the idea of a pit of any kind.  I didn't really want to have a major plumbing project on top of making a pit, so I compromised with the low rise lift.  I have a few friends who have a full pit in their garage, and it is really a nice way to go if you don't have a lot of headroom.  Of course I am a bit envious of a few other friends who have two post lifts in their garages, but they have the height needed for them. And my floor drain did come in very handy when I was wet sanding my MGA body.

Nice ideas & solutions.

For those not wanting a 4-poster or a full pit, they could consider a shallow pit deep enough for the lift amd maybe some cover planking/plate, so it is flush with the floor. Do it right and the lift in the down position could support the floor plates, which then might be aluminum checker plate etc. (Shoulda thought of it when I did my garage, dang-it.) Of course with a concrete saw....

I bought a Bend Pak low rise lift from Garage Supply, as linked by MacDhaibhidh  Thought it would be made in USA since Bend Pak is a USA manufacturer.  Nope, made in China.  OTOH, the lift has worked well.  The only problem is poor quality greese nipples, having 3 of them fall out when I was greasing the pivot points.  The lift paid for itself in no back pain when I installed the drum to disk brake upgrade last winter.  I could sit on a comfy chair and work on the front wheel and suspension parts. I don't have a photo to add to this thread yet, but maybe will take one soon.

I really did'nt want to buy a lift made in China, let alone from Harbor Freight. I could hardly find a unit made in the USA, even the USA vendors and more reputable places are selling the same units painted differnent colors for more money. One vendor i was dealing with told me there Lifts are made in the U.S.A, but after further investigation the parts where made in China and only assembled in the USA. I guess my HF model was also assembled in the USA!
