I just did a quick first and second gear test.  Cable worked fine, job done.  Now to reinstall the cluster and finish up the doors.

No harm just be careful and if you are going to go through the gears have it facing the street.

Thats a great idea. I would of tried it BUT I GOT THE DAMN THING OFF!  THE CAR BENT TO MY WILL AND RELENTED ITS GRIP ON THE OFFENDING PART.

I ended up using a basin/tap wrench (thank dad for lending one to me).  I came up from the BOTTOM of the car and was able to get just enough grip to break the seal.  Then used a screw driver to spin it off the rest of the way.  Tomorrow evening I'll have my wife and her smaller hands to get it screwed back down.

Also, i read that sometimes you need to grease the cable.  Mine seems to be greased already, but how much grease do you need?  I assume you can have too much.
I had heard you can loosen them with the plumbers wrench but never used one myself. When you put it back on be careful not to cross thread the fine threads and just nip it tight it isn't going anywhere.
Just re-installed.  I help position the wire from the top and she screwed it in.  She got it finger tight and then i gave it a light tap with the flat heat to snug it.  it only moved about 1/16 of a rotation.  Tomorrow we hook it back up to the gauge.  Any harm in running the engine and testing the setup while on jack stands?

I put a gob of high-temp grease between my fingers then pull the inner cable through it before inserting it in the outer cable housing. I don't know if this is the "correct" way to do it but this has been my method for over 30 years on both my Minis and Lambrettas.

Or just download a gps onto your cell phone.
I became an expert Jonathan after removing mine on my Moke four times in one day. I replaced the cable and then the speedometer and checked that the cable was turning only to find out the used gear i had installed was spinning on its shaft under load.

What always worked for me ( well almost) was to turn your back to the front of the car and use my left hand. This way I was able to get my hand down enough to reach the end of the cable. Not without a few scrapes ......

I believe i used a 1/4" drive ratchet and socket on the last one i did that was tight.

If your wife cannot get the cable nut off the gearbox, try Malsal's advice posted above.  The bolt holding the cable drive to the gearbox has a 7/16" across the flats hex head.  A stubby wrench and skinny arms from below can remove that bolt so the cable and its flange can be removed from the gearbox.  Once removed you can pull the cable up and work with it on the bench.

good news, wife has tiny arms and hands.  She can almost get to it from the top, so if i loose the engine stabilizer i bet she can reach it.

Yeah, that's part of the reason it is being replaced (and the gauge side is broken so the screw doesn't torque down to the speedo ).

Going without is not an option I want to entertain.  I read elsewhere about removing the top engine stabilizer and rocking the engine forward and going in through the top.  might try that in the morning.

I'm attempting this right now on my innocenti. Is it a lot tighter on a left hand drive car?  Maybe  i'm looking at it from the wrong angle. I see the forfeit holding down the cable but can I get that from the top or only from the underside?  There is not a lot of room if any between the subframe and drive shaft.
