How do those universal ones actually "seal"....are they not split open along the length?

advanced auto parts, auto zone or similar have "universal fit" cv joints, just replaced one myself last week. You attach then trim to fit. Worked great.

Driving a Mini is about like driving a go-cart, so it makes a weird kind of sense that ATV boots would work. Brilliant!

Last year I downloaded the EMPI boot catalog and compared boot dimensions with Mini CVs boots.  The EMPI 86-2371-D boot will fit on the drum-braked Mini CV joints.  It fits a number of ATVs, probably much easier to find than Mini CV boots.  I did also figure out which EMPI boot would fit on the disc-braked CV but don't have the info here, its in my notebook at the shop.

The QJB155 boot for the Cooper S measures 22mm/63mm/96mm.  Over here that's 0.87"/2.48"/3.78".  The first two are the I.D.s of the end bells, the last is the overall length.  Closest I found in the EMPI catalog was 86-2461 (Polaris, Yamaha atv) at 0.8375"/2.296"/3.05" .  The 86-2452 (Audi/Porsche/VW) is 1.025"/2.495"/3.465", so it would work if you made a sleeve/spacer for the little end.  Cut off that part of the old boot to use it as a spacer. Other EMPI boots have similar dimensions but the pictures show bellows that stick out further than the cartoon I drew of my Mini boot, so I worry they would foul on the hub.  The ones I list here look to me like they would fit, but have not tried them.

Erik:

If you are still in Albany, email me. I am in Fremont and have a used one if that will work for you.

I have no way to drive it to you as my car is on blocks.

Terry

Try a Suzuki swift or geo metro boot as they are close in size

For emergency repair, stuff the remains of the boot with a shop towel and cover the boot with a plastic 'baggie', zip-tied at both ends. Then, get the correct replacement.

Don't ask how I know this works (or look under my new(er) ride!).
