To control such 'roll' w/the 'smooth-a-rides' and w/o inducing harshness, could fitting an anti-sway bar[s] be a viable option?    -John

From Personal Experience here.

1 year ago - I put the rear cones- on the front of my car - and installed new rear cones. These new cones I ordered from a UK Supplier- with a set of tires. The cones came with Moulton still in the rubber- but the Dunlop has been removed. AS- research shows Dunlop is no longer making cones, and they are all being copied from the original specs.

Fast forward another 8 months - Said hey - I'm going to replace my front cones - The front of my car was very choppy and harsh on the highway - Ordered 2 cones from a USA Supplier- and eh - they came in No Markings- No molding marks - Different metal band color vs the UK Cones. I believe this second set is a knockoff set. I wasn't going to wait or fuss- I installed. No matter what the new unmarked fronts work and ride MUCH Better than the originals . Will see how they last.

AS said - new cones ride great no matter what - If you want super performance, or track oriented- GO Ahead with Competition cones or springs. I recently saw a small shot in MiNI Magazine about Urathane Cones- refrenced to a Japese Suppler website--- website was completely in Japanese and couldn't read a thing. I would assume urathane cones would be pretty harsh too.

I have another mini local friend -installed the complete Moulton Smootharide Kit.... From day one - he complained about the body roll, and its noticeable when riding near watching and feeling. He would ride in my car and love the tight feeling of normal cones- lowered about 1 inch- GAZ adjustbles. He has kept the smoooth-a-ride cones. but installed GAZ Adjustable shocks to control the roll more. Just thoughts.

I change out a lot of the rubber springs. For a long time I was able to still find ones in the Rover bags. Now it's a little luck and research to ask around about what's out there. I had a set of the Mini Spares Center comp ones left over from a race car job. I put them on the front of my 85 1000 E fitted with a 1360 cc 67 Cooper S engine. I drove this can with new Rover springs for 87,000 then spent a year rebuilding the suspension , brakes and power train and added a gauge pack. After driving for a couple of months I have taken it off the road. I feel like the comp front springs are to harsh for everyday street driving. The cam shaft and 1.5 rocker arms are not well suited to my driving style. The 12 inch Rover mini lite knock offs and 145 tires are not what I want to end up with. I find getting one just right almost always requires just a couple more things be done. Steve (CTR)

I have the "SmoothaRide" system. Rear cones appear to be stock genuine Moultons. Fronts are also labeled "Moulton" (he did design the system) but are much taller, and so require adjustables, which come in the kit. In my case, the fronts are wound as low as they will go, then leveled, and the front end still sits like a brand-new car (high!).

The straight-ahead ride is much nicer as the springs are much more compliant until loaded up. On cornering, the initial lean is more than most would prefer, but once the compliant part of the sprring is absorbed by the additional loading, it does firm up nicely.

In the pic, the SmoothaRide frontcone is on the right, stock cone in the middle and "old squashy" on the left.

I think the "red dot", or performance doughnuts from minispares do indeed require adjustable suspension ( aka "Hi-Lo's ).  I'd like to get a set for myself actually.

I bought a pair of doughnuts ( springs ) a few years ago that turned out to be reproductions.  The nut broke free undercompression. BANG!
I'd definately not buy anything that isn't stamped "Dunlop"...or Moulton"....FAM3968 I think is the part number.
There's also the Moulton "Smooth-a-ride" available...different size/ composition springs up front....from what I've read...a very good ride.

Looking to buy new rubber cones, everyone says theirs is the best. What brand/supplier seems to hold up the best? Are the performance cones worthwhile and do they hold up?  Do performance cone require hi-los or will stock trumpets work?
