So I did some reading up on this and read that the breather should be plumbed into the aircleaner and not the carb port if there is no PCV valve. I did this and capped the carb port and still get oil all over the front of the motor. The curious thing is that I don;'t see the dipstick jump or anything when I rev it in the driveway. This oil mess seems to appear only after a good run. The oil coating is from the top of the valve cover all the way down. I checked to see if the breather canister on the tappet cover was clogged and it it not. Neither is the cap. Should I add another breather (from where) or is this a sign of bad blowby? It doesn't make sense for blowby. The motor was sold with the understanding that it was rebuilt with 1k on it. And it certainly looked to be the case internally when I swapped gearboxes.

Question: What's it like driving a mini?

GFE6003 is the cap.

And the tappet chest vents into the side of the HS4 carb.

Vented cap? Vented PCV valve you mean? If that is the case it could be clogged not allowing enogh PSI engine pressure to relive it'self. Thus the dipstick jumping to relive pressure. I work for a very good vent company which specializes in automotive vents. I tried one of our vents on the PCV valve and it did not work. Had to have the line going to my HIF44 carb.....

The tappet chest cover, where does it vent to?

I've got a vented cap and one on the tappet chest cover. Engine is a factory gold seal with a little over 1000miles on it.

2x what Cup Cake said, to much pressure somewhere not being relieved. There is a spring device out there that connects to the dipstick and the oil re-circ line to keep the dipstick in place. Cannot remember where I saw it though.

I don't think oil should be blowing out ... based on my experience, at least. On my 2 A motors (engines) the dip sticks are held in the tubes by gravity. I would think any back pressure in the block would cause blow-by but there is none. Are you sure your breathers are in good order? You should have at least 2, one on the block and a vented rocker cover cap. You can't have too many of them on a Mini motor.

Thanks Malcolm. I figured that based on the ones our host sells but wanted a second opinion. Ran it out to Merritt Island for a mothers day surprise/long stress test and other than the oil bath and bumping the idle screw a few rpm it did great right up to 65mph (a bit scary past that tho!).

Cheers,

No Shane no tube it just sits in the block. Sorry i don't have one.
