I do my own at the local auto machine shop. They have a flywheel grinder and I carry my own set of milling machine hold downs and dial indicator. While they know these flywheels and back plates can be done no one there is interested in doing them. I take all I have on hand and do them while in the machine. I index and do all the flywheels first, then I run the wear face of the back plates. If I have a new disc and P plate I check the preload and then trim the lugs. If I don't have the parts I match the flywheels and back plates and leave till I can adjust back plate with the new parts. I have yet to do a verto. I use the light steel replacement flywheels. By the time you replace the ring gear and machine the old ones you are close to buying a new one. Steve (CTR)

For resurface of backplate check with local shops that do air cooled VW.  Mini part needs similar setup as used for grinding/cutting recessed surface of VW flywheel.

After flywheel and backplate facing, I assemble with the diaphragm to check the spring is flat. If not I check what needs to come off the 3 lugs by removing 3 straps (which are .035" thick) then checking assembly again.

I used to clock the backplate up in a lathe to face the 3 lugs, however I now find it much quicker and easier to clamp the backplate to the table on the mill, then run the cutter across them. I have digital readout on the Z axis to make this easy.

Cup, Thank's for responding, I have seen a measurement on this site for the back plate friction surface to the the top of the posts, and that it must be maintained after machining, but for the flywheel side I thought you just need to make sure the straps are not loaded up or down on the flywheel/disk/ back plate assembly. I dont trust that my old back plate is correct, and I know it's not flat based on uneven wear on the old disk. new to the mini world, was only able to drive the car 4 miles last fall, I think I was smiling, but the memory is dimming. all help is welcome

FYI just in case you don't already know BUT when you reface the flywheel and pressure plate, the gap between them is increases, so you also need to remove the same total amount from the posts on the pressure plate.

Hi, I am located in the Detroit area, and am unable to find a shop to machine the back plate and flywheel for a per-verto clutch setup going on a 1989 A+ 1275 in a 1962 mini. Where to go?

Update, flywheel is reground and looks great, done by Glendale automotive in Farmington MI

Cylinder head being remachined by Gregs Heads & Custom Engines in Riverview MI (He has the correct .280" guide pilot for serti machine)

Still need back plate or pressure plate machined
