Well there's your problem!!  Canadian pennies are no longer made and so useless ....! ;-)

I installed the pennies (Canadian) a while back but it didn't make a difference.

So far, runs best on AAu which is a stage one needle.

Will try AAE because is slightly richer than stock for late 998's.

Thanks for the chart.  I have seen this a couple years ago and tried different needles and noted the results.

I read somewhere that the AAU was most popular.  After installing it the car ran great.  However after sitting for a month or two it ran crappy.  Hesitating and sounding like it was running on therr cylinders.

I put the ADe in and it runs crappier; hesitating, sputtering and stalling.  Pulling choke helped a bit but i could hear the engine missing terribly.

So now I have replaced the float valve and the ignition coil.  Will re-install the AAU and see what happens.

You can also convert a WaxStat to a "regular" jet without replacing it.  ry the metal cage off the wax cartridge on the jet, replace it with 2 or 3 pennies and crimp the metal cage back in place.  I like the choke linkage better on the WaxStat carbs.  It uses something akin to a ball and socket on the end of a bent rod in place of the bent sheet metal parts of earlier HS carbs.

ADD, ADE, ADF, ABB, ABX, ABJ have all been used in 998's with HS4 carbs.  If the ADE isn't quite right, maybe this will help you better target what you need:

Thanks for the response.

In ref. to too rich, the plugs are very sooty after a long drive.

The car was running okay but with lackluster performance.  So I installed one of those K & N air filters and the stage one needle.  Could never get it to run smoothly even after installing the stock filter.

After installing the AAU it ran great. But as time went on the engine began the hesitate and not run smoothly.

So what I will do now is to install the ADE and see what happens.

Cheers

Craig

Our 85 1000 E had a wax stat 1 1/2 SU. It gave good service for some 87,000. when they go bad they default to dead rich. When that happened I replaced the wax stat protion and drove on. I don't know how you are checking for richness. Raise the jet tube nut to weaken the mixture. You can afford to run a little lean at idle there is no load to consider. Steve (CTR)

Waxstat referrs to the jet and is independant of the carb or needle.  A waxstat jet has a mechanism that adjusts the height of the jet in response to temperature changes (allowing a richer mixture at lower temps which leans out as the temp rises - I suppose it might be considered something akin to an auto choke).

I've not had one and they seem to have a bad reputuation with the main response being "replace it (with a standard jet)" whenever questions are raised.

I think they wrere originally designed as an antipollution device...

Cheers, Ian

AAU will be a bit too rich of a needle for a stock 998

What is the difference between a waxstat carb and a non waxstat carb?

I know about the needle and jet assembly.  But is there anything different about the body?

Currently am running a red jet tube with a AAU needle.  Idles smooth, too rich at speed and hesitates too much during transition from idle to higher rpms.

Any suggestions?

By the way; 998 stock Mini.  Dwell and timing spot on.

Cheers
