Larry,
I'm with you all the way Bud!!! There should have been someone out in the parking lot crushing the vehicles of those idiot speakers while they were spewing their words at the podium! The Hindenburg has gone down for the second time!!! "Oh The Humanity!!!" (remember the part in the original 'Italian Job' movie when the Mafia crushed those gorgeous collector cars and sent Charlie walking back to town?) You remember cash for clunkers? Many of those cars are still there in stadiums and fields and yards, at a taxpayer cost of $24K ea. after administrative 'fees and costs'.
Not entirely acurate, at least for Bush Stadium where your pics are taken:
"Between 2008 and 2011 the Stadium was used as a storage site for cars traded in as part of the Cash for Clunkers program.
Construction began in March, 2012, to turn the 80-year-old grandstand into Stadium Lofts apartments, which is scheduled to open in August 2013.
Core Redevelopment LLC will preserve the shell and historic façade while turning it into a 131-unit apartment complex. Another 132-unit apartment complex to be named Stadium Flats also will be built at the site. The remaining land will be set aside for the development of up to 118,000 square feet of commercial space."

That video made me sick to my stomach. Government doesn't have anything better to do with their time? That Mini should have been at least auctioned off and the proceeds given to the local homeless or elderly in need! How many of the recent recalled vehicles that caused all those lost lives because of faulty equipment not being reported were crushed??? That claw was a joke too. Did they have a five year old at the controls? If you're going to crush a car, crush the damn car, don't try to pinch it to death. Mini Estate
Yeah, but being government there is no accountability or incentive for efficiency, as we in the world must live by. They have your tax dollars to do what they want with, unlike the rest of us. It's the government we ourselves allowed to get to this point. Now it's too big to control and will outwit us every time - it's very survival dependent on us knowing and doing as little as possible to tame it.

Does anyone know the true history of the car that was seized and destroyed?
It seems the car was destroyed because the identity had been changed to get around the age limit. But where did the car come from before the identity was changed?
Was it legitimately purchased and then faked to get into the USA?
Or was it stolen and then faked to get into the USA?
The USA and a lot of other countries have strict import laws, if you fake the paperwork and identity of a car you are a criminal and you deserve to pay the price for your crime.

And the newer minis have a computer controlled engine which met European pollution standards at the time (at least as restrictive as US standards for similar year US or import legal foreign cars), an air bag for safety and side crash protection, all certainly better than the older minis that are "acceptable". So what protection for consumers is the government spending all that money on.
I can never understadn why a 2000 Mini will be crushed when my 1967 Moke is ldeemed legit.
It makes no lick of sense.

I'm sure others on this forum besides me have had a link emailed or messaged to them a dozen or so times by their friends. This is a stunt designed precisely for that-- get the news spreading virally to put fear, worry, or skepticism in the community about this topic and the owners of imported cars. Take away the desire to own non-US market cars and the they'll stop being imported-- I get it. People won't buy what they don't want.
I spoke with folks from the Rover community about the whole Rover seizures within the past year and from what I was told (I didn't verify) was that MOST of the seized Rovers were returned. THIS is not publicized. There were lots of discrepencies with Rover record-keeping and identification numbers were actually re-used. The whole cycle of Rover numbers restarted. And engine numbers do NOT match the chassis numbers as CBP were lead to believe.
I've been trying to find how "Operation Atlantic" is funded and I'm not having much luck.
THAT's where you have to direct your anger or frustration. IF (and I do mean IF) government is Of the People, By the People and For the People, then the action our government takes is supposedly directed by us. IF you truly feel this is a waste of your tax dollars, you need to reach out to your representatives and let them know.
I think we need Dooderwear to make up some Special Edition T-shirts that read, My Mini is Not a Terrorist! And Being Right Handed is Not a Crime!
I do appreciate that there are attempts being made to help protect consumers in the UK and elsewhere from having their cars stolen and, on the other end, protecting consumers from fraud. It is enormously frustrating to buy something that is sold as one thing (a 1960s car) and what arrives is another (1990s car.) I think official efforts would be better placed to bolster the resources to pursue confirmed defrauders (when there is a plaintiff who is not the government) rather than use a shotgun approach. I can tell you, from personal experience, the wheels of our current justice system when going after known licensed dealer who is commiting fraud is miserably slow.
When someone receives merchandise that is not what it is represented to be, and the buyer is upset enough to file a fraud claim, THEN tax dollars should be spent, cars should be taken, and damages paid to the victims. I think that will be a more targeted and effective method of protecting the consumer who wants protection. There are flaws in this idea, but I still think it can implemented more effectively and with greater consumer satisfaction than Operation Atlantic.
