Production of S was limited to the numbers required to homologate them for production car class in international rallies.

I'm not surprised at the prices and if anything, they are still a relative bargain when compared to some other mass-produced vehicles (23-window VW bus, anyone?).
Most collector cars are based on the rarity and historical significance. The Mk1 Cooper S will always be the iconic benchmark of what the Mini is all about (be it 970, 1070 or 1275).
Couple that factor with the relative few made (when compared to non-Cooper or Non-S) and it's a no surprise that prices are up, along with growing respect for the significance of these cars.
I just hope people still drive the things!

In the February issue of Sports & Exotic mag, it details the Gooding at Pebble Beach auction. A nice white and black 67"S" went for $46,200. The February issue of Sports Car Market mag, starting on page 76, details the history and sale of 64 1275" S" with competition history, for $ 138,790. Three other comp cars went for $87,560-$169,680-$83,022. It goes on to say " a half decent 1275"S" goes for around 25000 pound sterling. Has something nice very happened that I don't know about?
