If you'e not opposed to an upgrade but one of the best things I did to my old Moke was the S brakes. I needed it as mine wasn't a weekend car but a daily.

Back then the set was like $700 new but I reckon they'll be 5 million now.

I was the other forum member.  Same exact issue.  I got a re-built set sent to me free of charge.

I would send the vendor some pictures of the "fudging" you had to resort to and ask them nicely to send you a new set. (a set that's been checked in quality control)
I would also remind them that these parts are being used in the braking system and thay they should be concerned about the safety of their customers.....

This is how I ended up fixing the problem:

So far, they are all holding position, and the brakes can be adjusted without removing the wire.

I guess they don't make parts like they used to :(

Returning them is not a viable option I could afford.

So, my plan, unless someone has a better idea, I'm going to find some thin wire and wedge it behind the backplates, between the backplate and adjusters to close the gap. If that fails, blue locktite.

Another forum membdr recently had the same issue with new front back plates. If new send back to the vendor and request they go through their stocks to check for plates with suitably tight adjusters. The alternative is to dot punch around the adjuster to tighten it up which is not ideal.

I had the same problem Miguel.

My issue was with just one front adjuster though.  It was a lot "easier" to turn then the others.  I put it down to age and wear.  A new set should not be that lose though.....maybe you got a bad set (??)

I'm adjsuting at the right way of the cam, that was checked. Adjusting at the same direction as the rotation of the wheel.

I suppose there's not enough friction to keep the adjusters put in place.

Locktite might work, but won't it be a pain to clean if I need to adjust the brakes 6 months from now?

I can't be the only Mini owner with this problem.

I have no idea whether it willl help.... but the front brake adjusters are a cam.

So, if you keep turning the adjuster one way it will go tight - tighter - tighter -- loose.  The tightest point maybe too tight and this will prevent you doing a full revolution....

So maybe you're adjusting on the "wrong" side of the cam?  Maybe try turning the adjuster through fulll loose and then tightening up on the other side?

Good luck, Ian

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my Moke's front twin leading drum brakes.

I have recently installed all new front and back brakes, including new back plates. The adjust screws on the front back plates were rounded up.

Since I replaced the brakes, I have been fighting with the brake pedal, I would adjust the brakes and the pedal would be awesome, however it would only last for a little bit before it starts to lose power, to the point I had to double pump to get the pedal to firm down. I would readjust the brakes and the pedal feel would return.

I first attributed the problem to the new brake pads sitting in. Yesterday I readjusted the front brakes and used some paint to mark the position of the adjusters.

And today after a nice long ride I was able to confirm that 3 of the 4 adjusters are turning over by themselves, enough to significally reduce the braking power.

So, what can I do to stop the adjusters from moving but still be able to adjuste the brakes when I need to. Any ideas or tricks?

Thank you!

Miguel
