Mike

Remind me not to wave to you if l see you coming down the road. (LOL)

I am still trying to shake the memories of my Americas, back in 1967

Mike,

Thanks for the ashtrays Mike!

I doubt that I will ever drive the AA "like an 18 year old". I know their reputation and I tend to baby it a bit. I am just enjoying the uniqueness, the nicer ride, and the extra room that the AA offers compared to the minis.

mike, I broke the final drive on about 3 AA's back in the day. Std trans, and downshifting like an 18 year old double clutching, but the stress or machining was the culprit.

Mur,

Happy to get your input.

Hopefully, you are right. I will keep those ideas in mind in case I run into issues you mentioned.

Right now, I am just enjoying the ride.

I would NOT have even considered this car if it had the dreaded AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION!! The stick was the mail reason I considered it in the first place.

Cheers mate!

Americas do have their levels of sophistication. The automatics were obviously a nightmare for North American buyers, and any cars suffered from the greed, incompetence and parts supply issues that were in full force when the cars were new.

Your car wouldn't have those issues.

I would evacuate and re pump the suspension with a good robot service tool. I would go through the entire brake system, probably going to 1100 style calipers instead of the swinging calipers. Those master cylinders, if it is a tandem, are hard to rebuild, but rewarding, and are the same as midget/sprites of that era so kits are not as hard to find. After that, like a mini, if you fit Hall effect devices where there are now points you would be pretty seriously reliable. Still, at those kind of miles you can probably still go a. Long way before thinking those sorts of thoughts.

Mur,

I took the Austin America for a ride today and just turned 1750 ORIGINAL MILES on it! Its the most original car I could have ever hoped to own. Its a wonderful little car. Too bad they had such a bad reputation. They are roomy, fun to drive, and practical. It is really a great little British car.

Mike,

are you after the 1/2 moon insert ash trays?  I believe I have 2, not sure if they are complete with the shell or just the 1/2 moon insert. Either way, if it's what you need, they're yours.

Still have not come across the book. I've got a few speedo's, a dash maybe some tail light assemblies. I've junked more than 13 AA's in my day.

RedRiley,

Yes, I have. None listed.

Plus, I just figured that it would be easier to get a hold of the ones for late model minis. Don't know if that is the case yet....but I am trying.

Are you going to MME?

Have you tried //www.austinamericausa.com/ ?

I saw an NOS ashtray on Ebay, but it looked like it was the one for the dash.

Does anyone have any late model MKV ashtrays that they wouldn't mind parting with? I need 2 of the ones that are in the front of the dash that rotate outward. I bought the most original 44 year old Austin America I could imagine. It was put into long term storage by the Austin/MG dealer FOR 30+ years. I bought it in January and it now has 1500 original miles on it. Original paint, chrome, interior, etc. BUT SOMEONE took the jack and the rear ashtrays that fit into the rear door cards at some point in its life. I believe they are the same as the late model rotating ashtrays that fit in the front of the dashboards of MKV Minis.

Please contact me if you can help me out. HELP!

I hope to have it at MME.
