You should not use "regular" grease of any type (including Vaseline) on rubber brake parts.  Brake rubber is typically made from EPDM which is not tolerant of petroleum products or similar grease and oil products (such as animal fats).  Some synthetic lubes are OK with EPDM but most of those are silicones... which you don't want mixing with non-silicone brake fluid.  Be cautious with most products listed as just "brake grease".  Many of those are not intended for use on rubber but are formulated for metal on metal like brake calipers sliding parts.  Better to lube any rubber with the brake fluid you are planning on using or the red rubber grease.

Anyway, that part was not on my clutch master original. Should I be using it? This is a later (all metal and eom rover) master with the groove.

The stuff I use is translucent.. whiteish .. and came from Vienna (VA) Auto Spares and is marked "brake system lubricant"....  I would think AutoZone , Pep Boys etc would carry the same stuff.

Petroleum jelley aka vaselene is probably the same stuff ...but works anyway even if it isn't (the same)..

Cheers, Ian

That Amazon add and like one eBay auction is the only place to get red rubber grease. Only one is from the us I think too. I do have a tub of brake assembly lube though so I'm covered there.

Thanks all all for the info. Should be getting to this over the weekend.

As long as the new seals match up dimensionally , use them but do not install the "Residual check valve " in a clutch master. Use brake fluid or "BRAKE " assembly lube/ grease on reassembly . Keep oil away from brake and clutch seals / hoses as it will swell them .

Wrong again - Using 'oil' on the seals can cause them to either swell, soften, dry, shrink, crack or develop any other negative deteriorative condition due to eventual incompatibility issues between the formulation of the 'oil' used and the rubber compound - in any event, not recommended.

I think not -

It appears to be the spring retainer, see item 19 in the text - looks like the thin end fits inside the spring as not to damage the rubber main cup seal.

(If you feel compelled to lubricate the seals during assembly, I use either fresh hydraulic fluid or a tiny smear of Castrol Red Rubber Grease on the rubber components only.)

That looks like the residual check valve used on the BRAKE master cyl.

I am rebuilding my 94 Rover clutch master. It has the groove at the bottom. I ordered SSB960 rebuild kit. I have no idea what this white plastic cap thing is that was included though??? Can anyone shed some light on that? It certainly didnt come out of my master when I took it apart...
