Wow Abel !  That looks absolutely great !

So it looks nice... how does the engine run?  I guess it will be time to look at those turn signals soon.  I have a lamp socket for you.

I used VHT Engine Enamel. If you take your time, prep, prime, and apply in coats, you can get an awesome and VERY durable finish. I sold the engine to Peter (PBraun) about 3 years after I painted ton and it still looked like I just painted it.

As for showing leaks... well... fix your leaks. Lol. I would think any real car guy would want to know their engine is leaking and clean/fix it. But I guess to each their own.

Yeah.. yellow so you can see the leaks better.. no thanks. Regardless of age, I use the good ol' hegehog puke green on mine. I love the nostalgic look.

Enamel, and I don't brush, I spray. It's not that hard, as you don't need to worry as much about drips. Most auto paint stores can mix up a batch for you. I use LandRover Bronze Green, though the truth is the actual colour does vary rom car to car as they were not terribly precice with engine paint (or body fit... or quality in general..) at th factory.

I like the Union Flag one of the members had painted on a couple years ago.. that made a statement!

Yeps, that the color I did mine in. The T-bird Red is a very nice, bright red. You have to really plan out the process to apply it though. The undercoating of the POR has to be tacky when you apply the color coat. Thats what makes the color coat really stick and tough.

The results give what I like to describe as a candy coating. POR self-levels really well and helps to smooth everything out.

Not a great pic but what I had on hand

I was told all the factory yellow ones came with unleaded heads but i never confirmed it.

The older yellow 998's were the inspiration for my yellow rebuild on Tink's 998 when I had it. Spent an entire weekend cleaning it, sanding it, priming it, and then painting it.

Yes, mine was a 998 in a 1983. Original as far as I knew.

It looks like there are different cylinder head combinations as well.

As far as I know the "gold" engines were replacement engines

Come to think of it....as I recall, my 89 1000 Auto was gold(yellow) also

yep.....

Are you guys absolutely SURE that all blocks after 69 were black? I had an 83 that had a yellow block and cylinder head, and my 72, in which the engine has never been out, has a black block but a green cylinder head.

yes, that's exactly the colour I have chosen, POR15 T-Bird red. I'll begin stripping the old orange paint over the weekend and will see how it looks.

thanks for the suggestions,

cheers,

Abel

My Rover Mini had a red block (orangy red I guess) and when I redid mine I used POR15's engine kit. It uses their rust preventative paint as a base and a color coat as a top. If you follow the directions, this stuff is great! I did mine on the last rebuild and even after I had to remove and rebuild the motor again, and it went through a hot tank bath, its still on there and looks great.

Everyone knows if you paint it red it's worth another 10HPSmile. Eastwood has brush on paint, how good it is I don't know. It does get some decent reviews.

Todd, that's a nice looking engine. I like the metallic touch of it. I will already have the rocker cover in polished, so it might be to much shine for me.

What brush on paints is everybody using and where do you get them?

Cheers,

Abel
