thanks to all of you (on and off the board) I will it a try and attempt to save the radiator. With a little patience, I think it will be worth it.

The inside looks brownish but I cannot tell if it is rust or just build up residue. I will find out in a couple of days when CLR has done its job.

As always, thanks a lot for your useful suggestions,

cheers,

Abel

I'm with the other guys on this one. This definitely looks like it could be saved with some TLC. Not sure what the inside looks like though. Is it really rusted or just sludge/dust?

I've used an old tweezer followed by an old feeler blade to straighten the fins on an old radiator before.  As Rick says, they're very soft and quite easy to straighten.

thanks Rick for the suggestion. Doug suggested using ZEP industrial degreaser for the outside and CLR for the rust inside, so I will give it a try and see if I can save this old radiator. I'll also try to fix the fins (with lots of patience),t

cheers,

Abel

Looks like the typical oily/misty goop that tends to clog up radiators over time...very long time for a Mini that doesn't leak oil.

Try a degreaser and a soft brush to work it into the matrix then rinse & blow dry.  Many of the vanes can be carefully realigned with a nail punch or similar...they are soft.  Unless it is otherwise damaged or leaking, reuse it.  They do work better when cleaned up!

I would use a 185-195 F thermostat for fuel efficiency especially if the coolant flows through the intake manifold.

Following on the removal of the engine head, I also decided to clean/replace some other areas and noticed that my radiator is a bit damaged. So, I am considering replacing it. What would be the options for a 998cc engine for the North Carolina weather?

Also, what about a thermostat? which one of these would be more appropriate? //www.minimania.com/part/GTS102-P/Thermostat-Various-Temperatures-Make-A-Selection

cheers,
