 Is the oil filter bracket attachment above the engine oil line?

Sorry but I should have been more specific ..... The filter adapter is aluminum and very susceptible to warping when overtightened . At least check the filter adapter gasket surface for level.

That's probably the reason for the thick gasket that is used.  I would be very afraid of getting sand and metal into the block from the grinding process.

When you have the oil filter adapter removed , make sure the gasket surface is FLAT . Use a file or dress it on a flat surface with some sand paper. I use a thick piece of glass plate with two different grits of sand paper stuck to it . You would be surprised how many "Parts" are not true/ flat !!!

no need to drain but some spillage will occur. Remove the filter slowly

It would be below.

Your MINI holds close to 5 litres of oil.....if you look at the size of your gearbox you'll be able to tell that that alone will hold more than 5 litres.

I need to replace the gasket between the engine block and my oil filter bracket (spin on type, '82 mini).  Is the oil level below the opening so that if I take  off the bracket I won't have a huge mess on the floor, or should I drain the oil first?
