Sounds like you made the DP1 long-version of the standard drain plug.

The HPS6 (and HPS5 w/filter gauze) baseplates are fitted when you're installing the COPU into the gearbox and the magnet apparently filters debris as it's sucked up by the COPU and hopefully before it gets to the oilpump.

I've been looking at one for years, but am still on the fence as to whether or not it's a good idea.  If the magnet or the gauze breaks or is damaged, then it becomes a real problem.  Like some of the copycat DP1 extended drain plugs that had the magnet come off.

Have you seen these?

HPS6

HPS5

I've heard that the filter version can get damaged, so if I were to buy one, I'd just go with the magnet version.  That said, however, my COPU is just sitting there with neither version installed,  and only the standard 1" magnet oil drain plug and the extra magnet on the filter.

It seems to work just fine.

No one has ever thought of manufacturing a magnetic dipstic on minis and other cars,, it's a lot more convinient and practical, you can check the oil level and wipe the magnetc stem with a disposable paper cloth to take away the iron shaving if there is., you can expel the shavings easily as many times as you want ,just pull the dipstick and wipe...no one has ever invented this,, i'll do it, and will Patent it under my name. Go on ebay, you can't find any,, there's one for motorcycle but not for cars. I have to act quick, before Minivation see my idea and grab it,, minivation do all sorts of inventions, like cup holder, bonnet hinge, motorized back side window opener etc, the only thing they cannot do is how to make the mini run fast..they may need miracle to make it happen, and when their invention doesnt seem to work, they break the mini into pieces in anger, with a hammer and a jigsaw...go to their website and you'll see this skinny guy with a black hair, and with a very long nose, hitting the mini with a hammer and cutting the bonnet with a jigsaw., i almost cry when i saw it.

I do the same as you, but bear in mind the oil pump is BEFORE the filter, so all the metal shards from the gearbox will go through the pump.
Yes and no!!  No one really knows,  Its the same case as the saying    " Who comes first, the chicken or the egg?"  Its still better to have a magnet underneath the filter than nothing at all., cheap insurance.

Car engines makes CO2 , that feeds the trees and pollutes the air, that's why a lot of people suffer from tubercullosis.

Car engines make CO2 and trees absorb CO2. By running your engine you're feeding a tree and helping the environment.

to me, the more magnets i attach to the sump the better, i can trap as many particles there is inside, I'm planning to install at least 6 more heavy duty magnets on critical areas around the sump, as long as i situate the magnet away from the electricals and moving metal parts., underneath the sump is the best location., i'll put 6 little super heavy duty magnets and use silicon sealant to adhere it, because the sump can't be magnetized., the reason for using more magnets is because you have to remember that our engine and trans is sharing same oil, you don't want oil with metal filings go to your gears and bearings.,  and i don't see any cons in using more magnets ,all pros., i don't think it'll slow down your car.,, and lets admit it, oil filter is not enough.

Thankfully I dont have a problem with changing the oil regularly.  At this point I have it down to a science.

This is all great feedback guys.  Sounds like the general consensus is to get a magnet for the filter at least, and then the longer drain plug if I feel like its necessary.  Thanks everyone!

I have those magnetic oil drain plug and i also put a heavy duty industrial magnet underneath the oil filter as seen in the picture, this will trap fine and coarse metal particles swimming around the oil reservoir. And when i toss the filter in the bin, all the trapped particles goes with it, i just pull my magnet back and stick it to the next filter.

I also use rare earth magnets. I extended the drain magnet rod and fitted a rare .earth magnet to reach the center pick up screen. I have not seen any build up of swarf. I use a very long oil filter with a large rare earth magnet on the back side and one on the bottom of the filter. Cheers

I had one of those (the Minispares one) and found it collected enough stuff to starve the pump of oil. So I removed it.

I now use a 22mm dia x 10mm thick Neodymium (rare earth) magnet on the outside of the spin-on filter can instead. It sticks there like a limpet mine.
Since doing this I get practically nothing on the sump plug magnet. And when you toss the filter away, there is no need to clean anything.

Works for me...!

Bobb used to make them and give them away. I have one and used it for a couple of years in a 1293 on a rod change gearbox. I had no issues with that end of the drivetrain and the magnet was clean when a valve seat failed and I pulled the whole unit apart.  A concern that other folks had about this system is that it could collect a fair amount of junk and let a bunch go at one time, destroying the pump, whereas systems without such a magnet suck up particles in small amounts over time and you end up hearing the gearbox more as it wears out, and you rebuild the gearbox, fit a new oil pump to the engine, and fit new bearings even though the old ones are good enough for Spank's race program.

Your best bet is to just rebuild the transmission perfectly, change the oil frequently, and stop trying to get the tires to squeal in every gear.

Hey so recently I had an issue with my bypass valve getting stuck open, losing oil pressure and destroying my mini internals.  The motor has been pulled and we are addressing the root cause.  We have since discovered a few transmission parts and various things requiring repair which might have caused it.  Regardless I am trying to do everything I can when I rebuild this thing to avoid this happening again.  I was looking at this oil trap for the oil pickup and wanted to know what people on here thought about it.  Anyone have expierence with it?  Think its worth even considering?
