Pretty normal at most dealerships now, if the computer can't figure it out for them they just start throwing parts at them at the customers expense.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Buy a cheap OBDII code reader and see what the code is then reset
or your local auto parts store may do it for free

It flashed on the dash display to close gas cap. This was after approximately 40 miles of driving. We have since driven 40+ miles with probably 10 start/stop cycles in between. The bad part is, we live over 3 hours from a Mini dealer.

Thanks for the note.

How do you know it was the gas cap? what fault code did it give?

If the CEL was caused by the loose gas cap, the light should go off on its own after correcting the cap.  I would have expected it to go out after 20 miles, but give it a couple days.

I think it will reset the light after I think 7 cycles doesnt count miles just on off driving cycles, but it will retain the fault in the memory.
