Zebra Moke is interesting and neat but doesn't appear to be one of the Beach Boys Mokes.

Eric was a good friend of mine and his was the first MOKE I ever saw.  It is hard to believe he has been gone for 23 years now.  I recently found this on the internet and instantly recognized it!   //jalopnik.com/5950089/for-19900-be-a-moke

If l can find another Moke, l think, l will give it the Beach Boys" effect as l restore it-

Gold wheel covers, no problem, just get any old vinyl records, spray paint them gold and Bobs' your uncle

Striped upholstery, easy??/least as there sure isn't much carpet or material in any Moke

So Hugh, as you source more info on the B B Mokes please share it

According to the back of the card, there were 22 made. It doesn't say anything about the 5 for the Beach Boys themselves. Herein lies the mystery. How many were actually Kustomized by Barris? Most sources say 25, 5 for the BB themselves and 20 to be given away. Never does it say anything about the unique first one that Barris kept. So, was there actually 26 of them? Maybe 22, 23? I know for a fact they built 6 (as I have photos of 6 different ones). The first one (Barris kept) and the 5 photographed in front of his shop with the BB sitting on and around them. It is a mystery indeed. One day I will get the opportunity to speak with Mike Love, Brian Wilson, or Al Jardine to hear their take on the subject. I personally think they only had a photo op with the Mokes and never owned any of them.

That is cool, Dr. Mini.  I had the pleasure of meeting George Barris on several occasions through a mutual friend so this is particularly interesting to me.  Funny because he knew I was into Minis and we talked about them a few times but he never brought the MOKEs up.

Maximum Mini doesn't have the whole story.  No one does.  I have been doing some research on this story and have found out quite a bit of info that it seems that no one else has or knows.  I have been talking with Jogi Barris (George Barris' daughter) asking her questions about the Beach Boys Mokes.  She said her dad was the only one who could answer the questions I had, but unfortunately he is no longer with us.  This is what led me to do the research I have been working on.  The story goes that there were 25 built.  One for each of the Beach Boys and 20 for Capitol Records to give away.  The first one that was built was photographed for a bubblegum card and was retained by Barris until he auctioned it off later.  It was the only one that had the gold records for hubcaps and the striped top and seats.  All the others had stock Moke hubcaps and solid colour tops and seats, so they are slightly different than the first one.  There are other differences as well, but I won't go into detail right now.
