Minerva this is wonderful to see.

As a Californian, we would be hauled off to jail for committing patriotism in public.  Here, showing the flag in your window gets you evicted.

Sir, thanks for standing in for us who are not able. Where was the picture taken?

To quote (indirectly) a street interview comment: CPL Cirillo died doing what the last line of our national anthem say " O Canada, we stand on guard for thee."

The picture was taken in Campbell River, BC, Canada on Vancouver Island. The Cenotaph is in the middle of downtown at a place called "Spirit Square"...which was built when we hosted the winter olympics in BC a couple of years back. It remained as a legacy to reflect the olympic spirit.

Here is what I posted locally about the event..

As I stood there at the cenotaph, one of the things I noticed in front of me as I bowed my head was a large, dying maple leaf. The colour of summer was almost gone from it, but touches of green still showed at the edges, a reminder of what it had once been. It pointed toward the Canadian flag behind me and the cenotaph which held the summer memories of those it honoured. As I recalled my reasons for being there I looked again and again at the leaf as the rain pounded onto it as it lay flat on the pavement. Just before Sean came around to dismiss us, the wind caught the edge of the leaf and it swirled away in the distance and disappeared amongst the other dying leaves around us. Symbolic of what Canada means to many, specially those who have sacrificed.

This morning, CPL NATHAN CIRILLOS was laid to rest in Hamilton Ontario at a full military funeral, with the Argyll and Sutherland Regiment acting as his honour guard as he was one of their own-It was televised nationally-

It was gut wrenching to see his 6 year old son, wearing his fathers' regimental hat, not really cognizant to what was happening-

CPL CIRILLOS had served in Afghanastan and came thru that tour of duty only to be murdered when he came back to Canada-

Perhaps the six F-18's that we just deployed to the Middle East will now even the score-

So to recap this past week in canada,

Two Canadian soldiers killed, one in Quebec, one in Ottawa ontario,

The cowardly killers (murderers) in both cases were Canadian citizens of the Muslim religion,

The RCMP have 90 Canadian Muslim terrorists under surveillance but how many more are out there ? And how can they follow them 24/7 ? The problem is compounded by the fact many of these 90 suspects are Canadian citizens now and we would be unable to deport them-))

as harsh as it may be our government must now play hard ball and stop all immigration from the Arab countries involved

many innocent people will be punished by this but it will stop these irresponsible acts of violence on our soil-

we must also review all Muslims now living in canada and try and sort out the ones who will most likely cause problems here

You or they may say this is unconstitutional but then what do you call these last two murders ?

As l see it, this is just the tip of the iceberg and more acts of violence are just around the corner-

And Just in case you missed it, one 30 year veteran was run down by a jihadist as he walked down the street in uniform and the other a 24 year old reservist/ corporal guarding a national war memorial in Ottawa was shot twice in the back as he stood on guard with a rifle containing NO. ammunition

Here in my home town tomorrow morning at 1000hrs, local Vets are forming up at the Cenotaph downtown and standing vigil for a while. I'm going to jump into my Red Serge and join them. I'll bring my Dad's ashes with me. He was a WW2 vet who went overseas with the first contingent, was wounded twice and returned home safely. He passed away peacefully at 99 years of age 2 years ago. He is my personal hero and he deserves to join us there too. Weather is supposed to suck, windy and rainy...to hell with the raincoat for this one. My droopy Stetson will reflect how I feel and I can always dry off at home later.

Saw that cartoon on the news last night , a very poignant visual

For anyone who knows our National War Memorial, this cartoon will bring a lump to your throat.

For those who don't know it, there is a bronze statue wihtin a stone arch. The statue depicts a group of WW1 fighters (soldiers, sailors and Airmen) struggling together as on a battlefield. In the cartoon one has gotten down to aid their new-fallen comrade.

A fallen comrade

Its sad really. I didn't realize how good the "good ole days" were when I was growing up. I miss those days. I feel especially sad for my kids and grandkids. They won't know how GOOD those days were.

Looks now like there was just one shooter in Ottawa earlier today...a recently radicalised Jihadist...his Passport had been siezed to prevent foriegn travel.  Shot the young soldier at the National War Memorial in Confederation Square with riccochets and a related injury (Rideau Centre opposite etc.) then got to Parliament's Centre Block (House of Commons on the west, Senate Chamber on the east) where he was taken down quite quickly - 14 seconds after the first shot was fired.  Unless I'm mistaken he got off just one shot before being taken out in a fusilage.

Apparently a former crimminal - drug charge in Montreal, robbery in Vancouver plead down to threatening -  BUT a radicalised Jihadist.  So, that makes one radicalised Jihadist, whose Passport was siezed, killing a soldier on Monday and a second radicalised Jihadist, whose passport was siezed, killing a soldier on Wednesday.  Round them all up and quarantine them until the Jihadist threat of ISIS is ended.
