I don't have a TIG, but I have a brother who is a freaking epic fabricator and has a TIG welder. Sounds like I've got a way forward here. haha

We always used pressed steel Std Rockers on all our race motors back in the 70's Just TIG weld across the top and job done. Don't ever remember an issue with them at all............

So with all the negatives, what is the BEST set of roller rockers available? I've honestly not been interested in roller on my 1380 because of all the issues everyone seems to have with the various sets. Along the same lines, if you weren't wanting rollers, but you had a high lift/high duration cam, what non-rollers are the best?

Yes, but in service on a different engine.

These were swapped in as a replacement for the Mini Spares 1.3s that seemed to have their own issues.

This particluar head was not checked for coil binding with these particular rockers, but the head was carefully checked as several styles of rockers were tried.

I will get some more photos and Crazy Mike has offered to assist in failure analysis as well, but it will be a week or two.

You would think that the valve springs were binding up to cause that damage but as Terry said they have been in service for years that should not be an issue.

Yeah probably right at the sharp cut adjuster thread.

Agree; they shouldn't fail.

That's fine I was just curious of failure mode. Whenever and if convienient. Fatigue would be first guess but a look fracture surface would help.

The pieces are with the car which is about 100 miles away.

It will be retrieved in one to two weeks most likely.

Can you get a close up photo of fracture surface/s?

Seems to be my year for rocker issues...

These are not new though and have given many years of service.

The old MSC versions had the same slotted screw adjusters too.  Mine, the 1:3 green ones (Page #7, MSC Millenium Edition catalogue).

I think those are different. They look like MiniSport spacers.

The Mini Spares full roller version that I have use the allen wrench adjuster like the Titans used to.

In fact ten years ago the part number used to refer to the Titan version.

I retrieved the Titans rockers from my engine being rebuilt and will install them this weekend.

Some of those rockers look a lot like the set I have. Hope I'm not going to have trouble with them. But now that you mention it, I had a heck of a time getting my first valve adjustment right! I’ll bet if I re-do it right now I’d adjust up or down a couple a thou. It’s been decades since I last wrenched on a car and I thought I’d just lost my touch, feeler gauge-wise. I remember I could do a VW valve adj upside down, in the dark with the best part of a six-pack under my belt. It also could be that my standards, feeler gauge-wise were lower when I was 17.

Or, it could be I have elongated roller tips. Crap.

Terry: I’ve got about 1000 miles now and my warm oil pressure has settled in at 40 psi. My water temp remains a bit low at 190° but no time for that now, I've got to worry about my rocker assembly exploding.

Sooo...  Does anyone know who made the old MSC C-AHT405 green rollertip rockers?  I've had them installed since 2002; no problems (yet), but have a set a bushes ready to rebush them when/if I change the shaft.

I'm thinking of using KC's 1:4 in the new 998 engine, but haven't quite decided which cam it'll get.  I'm thinking the Russell/KC RE130T or RE13PP, but last time I spoke with KC he mentioned work on longer durations and lower lifts.  So, I'm still on the fence thinking...

Well, to be honest, I haven't started building it yet, still collecting bits and someday never really comes.  The new engine's been sitting on the rollerskate waiting for 'someday' to arrive for around 5 or 6 years now.

I think the issue that is most annoying is no response from the vendor.

I realize that the UK shuts down for an extended holiday break, but it is now January 7.

I forwarded my information and the link to all the email addresses I had for this vendor.

Unfortunately communication seems to be an issue for a number of vendors on both sides of the pond.

Alex:

That was my thinking when I started to buy rockers. It seems a well made set would have limited wear potential for the vlave train.

I understand Titan no longer makes many components for the A series and I think with all the other documented issues with the current vendors I will try solid versions for new engines.

I realize it is the holidays, but I would have thought I would have received an acknowledgement from the vendor of the particular set I that has a current issue.

It will be interesting to see what shape the valve train is in on the engine with the Titans after approximately 40K miles.
