haha... reminds me of my buddy - he installed a theatre sound sysem in his living room with everything hooked up to remote controls. His wife sleeps lightly (they are both in heir 60's) and gets up to let hiom sleep. One night she went downstairs and tried to watch TV quietly. MY poor buddy was suddenly wakened by his new system at full volume with "All About That Bass".

We have a set of day-to-day common rules, called the 'Husorden'.  One of these rules basically prohibits noise (loud music, loud guests, etc.) after 2200 hrs. on Sunday through Thursday, and after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  However, it also stipulates that it doesn't give the right to irritate, annoy or bother any resident, at any time.  So, even though it may be 1400 hours on Tuesday, you may or may not be able to have that rave party or Van Halen giving personal guitar lessons in your apartment.  If you do, and nobody is bothered by it, fine - super even.

BUT - if someone knocks on you door and tells you that your 'noise' is bothering them, you are obligated to turn it down, stop or find another place to do whatever you were doing.  So, do I practice my electric guitar at 0300 hrs?  No - besides Hyacinth murdering me, I know it might bother someone else.  Grind coffee at 1100 in the morning?  Sure - it's not likely to bother anyone.

It's all based on courtesy.

All of our residents have the option of documenting their complaints to our lawyer, who will send a letter to the 'noise offender'.  If there's a repeat incident, they'll get another complaint; 3 complaints and you're 'excluded' from the building - forced to sell your apartment and find someplace that will tollerate you.

In my 18 years of living here, and as chairman for about 8 years, I've only seen 3 letters issued, and to 3 different individuals.  Our building is comprised of owners between around 20 years old and up to around 70 years old - finding myself nearing the upper end of the scale - college kids through working professionals (some artists, some doctors, some teachers, some tradespeople).  Everybody appreciates the harmoneous and respectful atmosphere.  When the kids are studying for exams, they appreciate that the old farts aren't rockin' the house and the the old farts who have to work in the morning appreciate that the kids are respectful (and something that the kids realize that their day will come and they'll need to wake up and go to work...).

My perspective, Dimitri, is that it's not my problem that someone chooses to take the fun out of this community.  No member of this community has the right to spoil it for others.  It's the community's responsibility to decide what it wants for the community and the members need to respect it as a whole.  There must be room for differences, sure - it fosters growth and dialogue, but those differences mustn't offend or alienate other members.

Just my opinion...

ah.  Not the best analogy for me.  One you can ignore and the other you can't.

As a guy who lives next to a park where people come play there BOOMING BASS cars constantly (for some reason) I can't compare it to something I can easily avoid.  Simply don't read the post.

I enjoy the Willie / Boison banter BTW.
