Fantastic work Mark & Sarah! Both the restoration itself and the highly detailed spreadsheet. Never has anyone detailed a restoration like this before. You should turn it into a proper book on Moke restoration. The only book on Moke restoration so far, leaves much to be desired. His book rebuilds a little wheel Moke but modifies it to the point that it's almost an OZ Moke clone. Also, his panel drawings all have missing data. I know you could do a better book. I'd be happy to create the drawings for it and include all the dimensions. I also know that you know a retired English teacher that could possibly edit your text if needed. You really need to do this--The Mini community needs it!

And l should also mention that to be perfectly correct in regards to a UK Moke the seats (4) should be of the pressed steel style

OZ Mokes had a variety of seats, canvas marine style, tombstone etc but UK Mokes only had the original style

So, 4 seats if you can find them $1,000. Minimum, add seat pads $300.00 and then a new proper fitting top, $1,000.

And the build cost just continues to climb-

Nice speaking with Al and BC on the phone recently. I find this thread worth logging in for. I also have a Moke UK type which has become a long term project. I have been keeping notes on the costs. I also wanted to mention if you are looking though Peter's pics you will find engine and tranny pics. Cooper Tune, my shop in Hampton ,Va. built Peter's power unit as well as Zip's. While Peter is a good friend and we have enjoyed working together, Zip was a long time dear friend who I miss every time I open this site. I'm proud and pleased these two guys felt I could build them a unit to power their very special Mokes. I also upgraded the power in a Choke for a customer. I believe I can offer numbers on engine and tranny builds.

Currently building building four SPIs one with parts from Nick Swifts shop, one with parts from Calver as well as a std rebuild with a SW5 cam only and one we are still working on specs. Two 1275 GTs, one a 1400cc and another 1330 for the shelf.   Steve (CTR)

About $23K Al, not including the cost of the Moke. I had 29 panels replaced (entire center tub) professionally. I was going to paint the shell myself but my body man gave me a deal on a paint job so in the end, I paid for a professional spray to. The link below starts with a spreadsheet and then has about 200 photos of the restoration. The spreadsheet has different tabs. Cost of restoration/ Misc. services/ Bolts I had to order because the originals were too far gone/ A listing of Moke grommets and where to find most of them/ The hardware list = every bolt that came off the Moke, where it went on the Moke, pitch, diameter, length. Photos of each bag accompany the spreadsheet.

Lets add info-  you can buy a M-parts UK remanufactured Shell Direct from the factory presses!

//www.m-parts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=37_115

With the US $ to UK £ being the BEST It has been in decades... a £6600 shell translates to roughly $8800 USD
Add freight LCL Container shipping -  estimated = 1500$  you could have a bare shell at your nearest port for $10K.

No harm to Mini Mania and their 15k$ price - but they would order the same shell in the same fashion..

There are more out than anyone sees.. they are just Locally used- or stuffed away. I know of 1 other running one in Charlotte.

About a year ago = was walking in the neighborhood. and promptly noticed the signature rear end (bare) in a garage..... Stopped to chat . .  just arrived to their house- from the passing of the father. That purchased new = dissassembled in the 70's and never got it back together.   Nice family but ts a family treasure no matter what state it is in. But - if they want to make space and sell = I'm taking the oppertunitny!

Many here know me as a smart guy, (?),but now l think l am (Brilliant) My thesis for this bold statement is that l have finally , after a lot of research came up with the answer as to why Mokes are bringing "crazy" prices

There are 3 known reasons, much as used in Real Estate transactions 1/ supply & demand

2/comparable prices of actual recent Moke sales that can be confirmed

3/cost to build a Moke from scratch-

NB-For the purpose of this evaluation, we are not going to use the price of a Chinese (Moke) as a price factor, Apologies to BC notwithstanding-

So using " the asking price" approach, l calculate the present price would be in the $19k to $23k range

1/ S & D, very few offered, thus driving the price up to artificial levels

2/not enough Moke sales in the last year to verify any price figure-

3/yes, it can be done, just ask Peter Braun but the basis for any new build is the shell eg:our gracious host, mini mania lists a new Moke UK style shell @ $15,499.00 US Dollars-so add to that a respectable engine, sub frames, trim, wheels, tyres , wiring, lights & paint etc and you will be north of $30k in a heart beat, and this does not include any labour on your part

I would like Meb, Mike in Md and Peter Braun to tell us what their recent builds cost them but this is privileged information so we can only guess where they ended up- Or maybe Mark Caldwell of Duluth GA could let us know what a UK project Moke costs to bring from a "Bad News" Moke to a respectable finished product- 68 Moke is asking $26k for a 10 year old resto on. a 1968 Moke-Hays Harris of Wirewheels in Vero Beach FL always has 2-3 Mokes in stock, usually around $22k, And l know &25k would not have been enough to buy Zips UK Moke (ask me how l know)my top Moke sales were $25k and $28,900. Respectively-

I would appreciate any input from anyone who can add to this subject

Remember Mokes are not for everyone but any true mini enthusiast should own one before they DIE !!!
